Ugh

Man, I really screwed this one up.

I called Hannity today, but I’m afraid i didn’t make very much sense at all. You see, Hannity had me holding for nearly 40 minutes and when he came to me, it came as a complete surprise. I had a mouthful of grilled chicken sandwich (and when i say a mouthful, I mean a former Marine’s mouthful – one that hasn’t forgotten how to eat), and I had to suddenly spit it out to pick up the conversation.

Anyway, Hannity had been railing on Howard Dean. He mentioned some of Howard’s greatest hits regarding Iraq and Race, amongst others…

So my plan was to ask:

1) If Howard was so offbase with his Iraq comments, why was it that 11 out of 12 Iraq war veterans that have chosen to run for office have chosen to take up the Democratic flag and ally themselves with Howard Dean?

2) If Howard’s comments on race were so crazy, why is it that out of about 290 Republicans in the House and Senate, not a single one of them are black?

Unfortunately, that’s not quite the way the call went. First, I spit out the chicken sandwich and as a result sounded pretty flustered. Second, instead of saying “out of the 12 returning veterans of the Iraq war that have chosen to run for a Congressional seat, 11 are democrats,” I said something like “why is it that 11 out of twelve people running for Congress have taken Howard Dean’s side…” That didn’t quite make the point, I’m afraid…

But Sean knew where I was going so he cut my mike and talked over me, saying that he was a big supporter of Dean, that he wants to see Dean stay right where he is…

I was able to pounce on that… I offered to match any contribution Sean made for that purpose. He of course backed down, saying that he wasn’t willing to sink that low…

I coulda been a contender…

(I was never able to bring up the race issue because Sean thanked me for my call and hung up before I could bring it up…)

Just one comment: I don’t think we’ve fully realized the power of the Fighting Dems. These guys represent a miracle cure for what ails Dems in terms of the American People not trusting us with national security. We should be able to leverage these guys into sweeping gains in 2006 – by all accounts, the only thing providing any kind of respite at all for Republicans is their (undeserved) reputation for being strong on national security.

Usually, the term panacea is used to denote a limit – i.e., “this is not a panacea”… in this case, I think the Fighting Dems, used effectively, are exactly that – a panacea…

Let’s just hope that the Republicans don’t wake up to this fact before the primaries… the last thing we need is a false equivalency argument that whores like Nagourney, Blitzer and Matthews can seize on…

Considering all your successes, you are allowed one “gotcha” with a mouth full of chicken sammich. You do good work, Mike. Hang in there.

    Hey,

You have to be prepared. The chicken sandwich thing is inexcusable. You have to be ready to roll.
