Bill O’Reilly - Jimmy Carter vs. Reagan/Bush
Published by Mike Stark February 21st, 2006 in Podcast, Bill O'ReillyWelcome to Fire Dog Lake and Crooks and Liars readers. If you came here from there, it’s probably because of a post I wrote about calling wingnut radio. In it, I mention that I pretty much steal my material wholesale from blogs.
This is a perfect example. The whole idea I bring up in this call came straight from Digby. I’ve gone looking for the post, but he writes too much - I couldn’t find it. Anyway, Digby’s words always stuck with me - “Carter didn’t give one inch to those Iranian bastards…” because, I, like most other people, I suspect, have this fuzzy memory of Carter being a weak and inneffective President. I remember sitting in class in 1980 - that was the seventh grade for me - when reagan was inaugurated and the hostages were released… By November, 1985 I had joined the Marines… In March of ‘86, I was cheering Ollie North on as he gave those dirty politicians what they deserved - undisguised contempt …
My, how things change.
Even I, liberal to the extreme, had not put together these facts:
- Carter stood up to terrorists
- Reagan negotiated with terrorist (Arms for hostages/Iran Contra) and capitulated to them in Lebanon
When Digby put them together for me, it really resonated. Hopefully it will also resonate with O’Falafel’s listeners.

Hi -
Just want to say I love your site and admire you for having the tenacity to make these calls. The strength of your gag reflex must be off the charts, to be able to listen to these guys ad nauseum and converse with them and their screeners.
I popped over from FDL, and am adding this to site my favorites. Keep up the good work!
P. S. hope you have enough bandwidth to support the onslaught of new visitors I expect you will start having.
Just want to echo cosmo’s post.
I can’t hear the O’Reilly rant from last week though. The volume control is maxxed and still cant hear it?
Oh well, keep up the good work.
devis, anc cosmos - I’m glad you like the site. I’m gonna try to do at least one call daily, but usually two or more, so stay tuned…
devis - I just went back and played all of the O’Reilly clips with no problem. Maybe you want to reload the page you are on?
mike… any update on the podcast feed?
i checked the feed i was using in iTunes… it’s
http://www.callingallwingnuts.com/podcast.phpi opened it with firefox to see the code and i don’t see any links to the mp3s in there.
ps: love the new wordpress 2.0
no - i won’t know anything until tomorrow sometime… I’ll email you when I know…
thx
This is the best idea i have found yet on the internets. Keep up the great work. Maybe you can start a national trend of more people calling these chickenshit assclowns and making them look like the bedwetters they are.
Like the site a lot, what script are you using to play the mp3’s its simply wonderful the way it pops out to the side, can you point me to a place i can snag it myself?
stilgar,
i think the script is called pospress, but i’ve got to call my host… i’ll post here when i know the answer to you question
Do you have a podcast rss feed? Love the calls, and I’d love to get them automatically.
You are amazing! Congratulations on having the cohones to do this. I don’t have a strong enough stomach, even though I yell at the wingnut you are talking to while I listen to your podcasts. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!
Why would you post audio of O’Reilly making you look like a fool. And by the way, get a better recorder, the podcasts sound like ass. You spout off a few lines, from someone else’s blog no less, and the host proves you wrong nearly every time. The sad thing is you get excited as if you are somehow mentally superior to the folks you call ‘wingnuts’ when in fact you sound like an uneducated peabrain. Maybe crack a book or two and start all over again.
What a great idea!
You’ve got to get the enclosures in your RSS feed though - otherwise I don’t think one can really identify “Calling all Wingnuts” as a podcast. It’s more of an audioblog. There are extensions you can add to wordpress to add the enclosure to the RSS feed.
Here’s one: http://wp-plugins.net/plugin/PodPress/
Here’s another: http://wp-plugins.net/plugin/kg-enclosureflex/
Mike–
A fanstastic testament to the creative DIY ethic in concept, design and execution.
And then there’s the way you skillfully lift the veil as well…..
Thanks.
.
I love that you get these guys spouting off thinking that they are showing you up, but actually they are making fools of themselves. For instance, in this audio we here Bill O’Reilly claiming that Carter’s no-negotiation stance on terrorism was idiodic while Reagan was some sort of hero for playing their game. WHILE he has in the past also said that Baby Bush is completely right in not playing the terrorists game. So which the hell is it Bill?? He says whatever he has to in order to support the Republicans/conservatives.
Maybe you are too slow to have caught this but O’Reilly admitted to Carter being more in touch with this current administration as far as terrorism goes. Bush has stated countless times that we don’t negotiate with terrorists. Carter didn’t negotiate with them either, Carter did his damndest to get those hostages out safe. Reagan? He gave em weapons so they’d stop threatening us. Where we come from, that’s aiding and abetting known criminals. I really wish you would think things through before you blindly post your claims of superiority.
Thanks for the laugh at o’liely’s expense, Mike. BTW this site is looking great!

Great site and great job! Let’s keep this rolling - the strength of the liberal tradition is staying connected to facts and reality so lets use that to overwhelm those who manipulate using an emotional/propaganda response. Its time we caught up with their domination of the media….
Perhaps a “tip” sheet to help others with getting around screeners and dealing with these folk? If enough people join in they will have to deal with the facts whether they want to or not.
Mike…I like you!! Speaking truth to idiots like those wingnuts MUST be fun! I came over here from Crooks and Liars and have now bookmarked your site. I look forward to hearing more of you exposing those LIARS for what they are.
Mike,
Well done. Your site gives me the dry heaves and I mean that in the best way possible. Indeed, as another poster noted, you must have an amazing constitution to be able to even speak with these lying loonies; I would not want to go up against you on a Tilt-A-Whirl marathon!
Go get ‘em!
M-
btw, so’s ya know, I found your site through C&L.
You are AMAZING. I’m with the others who don’t have the stomach for it and I think you do a great job in a very hostile environment.
You might also want to check out Clarke’s book on Reagan’s actions in Lebanon.
(Page 39 - paperback edition) “Seeing the events in Lebanon as linked to the anti-American regime in Iran and threatening to Israel, which Reagan had begun calling an ally, he ordered Marines into Beirut. By so doing, Reagan began what would become a misadventure that gave terrorists the impression they could attack the United States with relative impunity.
“Reagan explained to a prime-time audience that we went into Leganon in part ‘because of the oil.’ Lebanon had no oil. The Iranian-supported Hezbollah faction in Lebanon responded to the new American military presence by staging devastating car bomb attacks on the U.S. Marines barracks and twice on our embassy. In the attack on the Marine barracks alone, 278 Americans died.
“There would be no similar loss of American lives in terrorism until the Libyan attack on Pan Am 103 six years later during the first Bush’s presidency…..
Neither Ronald Reagan nor George H.W. Bush retaliated for these devastating attacks on Americans.”
I read some posting at one point where a guy said there were all these errors in Clarke’s books - I don’t know if you want to google around for those (keeping in mind they have tried to discredit Clarke as they always do) but….they were not about these facts. And, of course, after this is when we started to help Hussein.
So…..long story short - O’Reilly’s comment about Jimmy Carter’s letting terrorists feel they could do what they want is his interpretation…when Reagan is the one that let them kill Americans.
Just like to point out that Reagan was not inaugurated in 1980, it was Jan. 1981.
Cheers, keep up the good work!
