Next Target

With Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia considering new Rapist Protection Acts similar to the one passed in South Dakota, I figured it was time for me to ramp up the calling operation.

Where better to start, I thought to myself, than with the king of talk, Rush Limbaugh.  The only time I actually saw Rush discuss this issue, he had his ass handed to him.

I don’t imagine Rush wanted to let that be the last impression left in my mind, so I called him this afternoon.  I called him on “Open Line Friday” - you know - that time of week when you are allowed to speak of whatever you wish…

Ahem.

The screener intercepted me.  Rush avoids God, Guns and Abortion he tells me…  If they take the call in the first hour, the whole show will be derailed - it’ll be all callers want to talk about…  Maybe he could call me back in the second or third hours…  what was my question?

I told him that if abortion is murder, then the woman must bear some sort of responsibility.  Since Rush is against hate crimes (murder is murder, right?), I’m thinking that the punishment has to include the possibility of the death penalty, right?  I mean, Rush is the most intellectually honest conservative in America.  He’s the Maharushie!  Certainly he’ll have no problem stating where he stands on this, right?

Well maybe not so much.

To be fair, Rush has returned my calls in the past.  Maybe they’ll call me back today.  I left my number.

(btw…  I pressed Jane’s question also, with a slight twist…  This time the question was, “Should a fireman risk his life trying to rescue embryos from a burning fertility clinic?”  The screenr said Rush wouldn’t touch that question.  Too abstract.)

Y’all know what to do.  12-3 EST, 1 800 282 2882.  Listen to the show.  Make up a talking point to get on the air with him based on whatever his conversation at the time is.  Be polite, but ask the questions you want answered.

These people are such #(@&%$# cowards. OF COURSE, Rush wouldn’t dare touch your questions with a ten foot pole. At least your second one…

I’m actually a little shocked that Rush wouldn’t just come out and say, “Yah, the woman should be tried for murder.” I really don’t know why they are so squeamish about this other than they know the audience would recoil in horror.

The firefighter questions is awesome. I suggest you pose it to Wilkow.

    Firefighter question is awesome……another question….
If I have a dish of 25 fertilized embryoes in South Dakota, am I allowed to claim them all as dependents on my income taxes. You know they are human beings…..

    Hey Mike,

Love the site and am tempted to join in (I’d have to call nights/weekends though cos I’m on the 9-5 treadmill).

Re. abortion questions, I love the hypotheticals and think the complaint that they are just “gotchas” is a lame cop out.

However, I also like the idea of pursuing the punish women angle, not only because it makes fence sitters squeamish, but because that is where matters *will* end up eventually if the fundies get their way.

Possible Wingnut Question: Shouldn’t there be a provision in the new SD law that punishes women who leave the state for an abortion? After all, women who cross state lines are circumventing the spirit of the SD law which outlaws the procedure. Further, without this provision, only poor women who can’t afford to travel across state lines are restricted. Everyone else will just go to Minnesota.

It would be great to ask this as if you were concerned that the law would not be followed to see if you can cajole the wingnut into more or less agreeing with this silly position.

    Keep up the awesome work!

i’m in west va… there is a very influential statewide talk show here called “Talkline” and they’re sorta in the middle politically but lean more right… theyve been gaining prominence over the last 2 elections and have had some impressive guests (for a lil show in West Va!) from McCain to Terry McAuliffe to Cheney (ugh…)

i call in alot… how can i help?

I also visit NYC frequently and I called into Mark Levin’s show (WABC after Hannity) last week about the Katrina tapes… I frustrated him, I think, by asking him “How do you prepare differently for a breach or an overtopping? Water is water and we weren’t prepared. And not only was the president briefed about the levees, but also was told the Superdome may not hold up well as a shelter”. To which he resonded, “well… what do you want the president to do in 48 hrs? Build a new stadium?”. hmmm… great defense, mark.

someone tell me what i can do…

I think you would have to get them Social Security numbers first, but that’s just the kind of slippery slope we need. Bottle up the courts for a while on that one, and when they rule that they are not people and can’t have SS numbers, take that decision back to strike down the Rapist Protection Act.

Based on what I’m seeing the last few days, I think the Democrats really need to start harping on the message that “Republicans are Racists”. It’s true, for one thing. And there’s so much proof to back it up (Katrina photos are priceless). And it’s a topic that the left can generate a lot of traction with - sort of like the Neocons when they talk about gay-marriage…

We need to start asking these wingnuts questions that will paint the picture of how out of touch they and their ilk are - not sure what the questions should be, but I’m giving it some thought and will post any good ones I can think of.

The abortion question has to be framed into reality.
Consider right wing idiots who want to outlaw all abortions, or those who want to outlaw abortions except in the case of rape.

For the first case, that would mean opening up a homicide investigation in the event of a miscarriage. Or having an abortion police force. I’m not sure, but I’m pretty certain that we have never sent a woman to prison for having an abortion. Ever. That means, the country would have to do something it has never done before: Charging a woman with murder because she received an abortion.

For the second case, imagine that a woman has been raped. If she wanted an abortion, that means she has to prove that she’s been raped. Period. What threshold would be required to prove rape? What about date rape? What about a prostitute who was raped? What about the woman gets drunk, someone rapes her and she doesn’t know who it was? What about a husband who rapes his wife? How long of a proof period is required before the courts grant permission for an abortion?

Right winged idiots are not in the realm of reality. It is up to us on the left to remind people that we don’t live in fantasy land, but in the land of reality.
