Rush Limbaugh: still a wingnut
Published by Mike Stark March 14th, 2006 in Podcast, Rush LimbaughI’ve been called to do a lot of interviews over the last week or two. Something that flummoxed me on several occasions was how to answer the question of precisely what a wingnut is.
I just had an eureka moment.
A wingnut is anyone that professes belief in the make-believe world of the ideological right while denying all reality-based evidence that undermines their preferred world-view.
Rush Limbaugh - wingnut.
Today I talked to him about Iraq… and he could not have set me up better. I probably could have taken better advantage of his inadvertant admission, but that’s for y’all to point out.
Anyway this how the call went… Before Rush had me on, he was talking about Sunday’s Soprano episode. He mentioned that he thought the new season opened weakly… that when you like something so much, when you get so personally invested in something, that it’s easy to loose touch with reality because you want to feel a certain way…
Ha. Ha. Ha.
I called to talk about Iraq and the reality vs. Rush’s vision…
He kept me on a very short leash - he wouldn’t engage to much. I think he let me in twice after my initial salvo… I had a lot more I was trying to say, but he just wouldn’t let me talk. When you are in a weak position, I guess, the power of the filibuster is compounded. Rush used it to maximum effect.

wrong about the sopranos, wrong about the war in Iraq
and the episode was brilliant
That’s the best description of a wingnut I have heard. Awesome call!
I heard your call live today. I’m getting pretty good at spotting you on the air.
You got your points in. Good call.
Also, agree with bacci40 that Soprano’s opened brilliantly. Right in stride with the entire series. I think the long hiatus made some people expect something different…or else they just lost that soft spot in their heart for these characters. But that couldn’t be the case with Rush since…ahem…well, I’ll let someone else say it.
“Still” Rush Defines “Wingnut”
Flummoxed…..good word that; sounds just like what it is.
And it is exactly what I was when I heard the chief flummmoxer himself, Mr. Limbaugh, bring up David Frum’s name. Two more facts about Mr. Frum folks should be aware of…..he is one of the principle architect’s of the debacle, Richard Perle’s, ghostwriter. He is also a Canuckistani who coined the bogus ‘Axis of Evil’ phrase - and for that we will always be required to apologize to the world.
But besides all that, the thing that really flummoxes me most is when talking point pounders like Limbaugh continue to pull out the ‘representative democracy’ card.
If only it were true he might, just might, have a point.
.
.
I also heard you live today. Good job!! Especially when he tried to baffle you with random people that had been to Iraq. Funny how he tried to say how well things were going in Iraq, by bringing up his trip to Afghanistan (last I looked they were two completely different places). Did you get to read the article in the Guardian about what the British thought of our postwar Iraq strategy?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1730427,00.html?gusrc=rss
It’s not great when your biggest ally thinks you are incompetent.
I guess you were already off the air when he “threw you a bone” about what if the war was going badly? He said we could still win. We aren’t going to win by doing the same things that have gotten us in this position, and the people running the war are unwilling to change our tactics. Remember , Insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expecting different results.
Thanks for also fixing the Prager link.
great job, great call..once again, Rush proves our point.
listening to it, i took some notes…
there is a large difference between our revolution and the Iraqui revolution that we started. there is no comparison, as Rush tried to make. he also said it “takes a generation” to get through these types of things — one of our generations. there is a difference between fighting for a change for US and loosing a generation, and fighting for a change NOT for US and loosing a generation.
he kept comparing wars between ourselves, or ones we joined — ie, Revolution, Civil, WWII — not wars we started.
this is not a war for us to win.
overall, he also had an obsession with convincing you that you aren’t patriotic because you want to give up and give in, because people like us, “you are quitters”.
overall, great job *thumbs up* keep up the work.
You are a moron. You waste all this time on these stupid phone calls. Get a life and get a job. Rush pounded your defeatist ass. You lost once again. And how about you use your real name and location? You are a quitter AND a coward.
Good call. Even the troll who just posted here fits your wingnut definition very well. To this definition we can add
- They prefer emotional arguments to factual arguments.
- They lump people into categories (ie all liberals are cowards, all arabs are terrorists, Osama and Saddam, etc)
- Everything is simplistic, black & white (you are with us or with the terrorists)
Many wingnuts are also conditioned by fundamentalist churches which teach one not to question what we are taught. Conservative radio hosts are preachers of politics. Is it a coincidence that most stations that carry conservative radio also carry religious programming? Not at all, because they have the same mindless audience. Just my 2 cents.
Troll? I can post comments anywhere I want. Check the first amendment.
I was pointing out how sad it is that Mike wastes all this time calling talk radio shows. Surely he can find something more productive to do with his life.
You said, “- They lump people into categories (ie all liberals are cowards, all arabs are terrorists, Osama and Saddam, etc)”
Well isn’t the term “wingnuts” lumping people into categories? Or cannot you not see your own hypocrisy?
Mike should be happy I have posted here, now twice. Considering he has a whopping 9 comments so far on this topic.
And no conservative says “all arabs are terrorists.” That is factually incorrect. In fact, when you look at the Democrats response to the Port Deal, it would seem that would stink of racism. Do they even know that China controls most of the West Coast seaports? Where is the outrage over that?
Hey Chucky,
You may not post comments anywhere you like… it is only through my generous forbearance and tolerance of wingnuts that your comment appeared here. I post troll comments mostly because I think it is important for people to realize what we are up against in terms of taking out country back.
If it weren’t for the sheer numbers of buffoons like you, it would be quite easy for us to make the world a better place. You folks lose every single round in the arena of ideas…
As far as the number of comments: I’m wondering how highly trafficed your blog is… Mine? Well, I’ve averaging over 3,000 visitors a day.
And it was your love-vixen with the enlarged adam’s apple that called Middle-Easterners rag-heads at the mainstrweam republican forum. Not one single Republican stood against Ann Coulter when she said that.
Tell me when you’ve seen that term used at a Democratic event.
Ahh there it is. Everyone is stupid except you. Everyone who does not think like Mike is a ‘buffoon.’ Typical liberal arrogance.
Actually since 2000 all your precious social programs have increased in scope. As seen here:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20060314/ts_usatoday/federalaidprogramsexpandatrecordrate
We are making this world a better place by bringing democracy and freedom to places where there was only tyranny and oppression before, no thanks to your side of the aisle. If allowing people to choose their own government is not ‘making the world a better place’ than I don’t know what is.
Here’s a question for you though:
If you only have $1000 to give a poor costal village in Africa let’s say, do you buy them $1000 worth of fish or $1000 worth of fishing rods and gear and provide them training so they can fish for themselves?
Chuck,
Here is what we are talking about, and I’ll use your own exaple to make my point.
If I have $1,000 to help that villiage, I would use $500 for fish (take care of them now) and $500 on equipment (take care of them later). It doesn’t have to be either/or, as most conservative commentators like to present the world. Life is rarely black/white, good/evil. This is what separates progressives from conservatives. You see nuances and cumbersome, we see them as essential.
Democrats have led the charge on trying to increase port security, but have been shouted down in Congress. Democrats have tried to mold the PATRIOT Act into what are traditional American principles, but have been called traitors for doing so. Democrats have stood up and said (post incursion), “We are not doing what is supposed to be done in Iraq. We need to hold our leaders acountable for that,” and have been deemed obstructionists.
The fact is, the conserviative movement has run us nearly into the ground with its long string of bad ideas and bad execution of those bad ideas, and yet they want the American people to think all is lovely. Enough of that. It is time to call a spade a spade and fix the issues that need fixing, but I will not trust those that made the problem, and that claim there is no problem, to come back and say “Stay the course.”
That dog don’t hunt.
I think the the stock market has climbed back to near record levels, over 11,000 again.
I think we have had positive job creation for almost 2 years straight now.
We have had positive GDP growth for over two years now as well.
Unemployment is around 4.8%.
I don’t think those facts back up your unqualified contention that “the conservative movement has run us nearly into the ground.”
Without the Bush tax cuts, its very possible we would still be in recession or have stagnant economic growth today.
The Patriot Act was renewed with more protections.
In addition, because of our strong foreign policy and George W. Bush’s leadership there has not been a terrorist attack here at home since 9.11 nor even at any of our embassies, consulates, outposts or even against American companies abroad.
The country is not in the midst of the Second Great Depression, no matter how much you wish it was. I am sorry you are now in the minority but that’s life.
Rush is insane!
The argument here is not that weren’t losing the war or being defeatist, it’s that the LEADERSHIP IS INADEQUATE. Time and time again, our leaders have proven innept at handling this war, and with the current administration, we are losing lives and money. It is winnable, but not with the current assholes who run it.
Rush has proved, once again, that he is a big fat idiot.
Chuck,
We have stagnant growth today, accorind to the General Accounting Office. Real wages have stagnated or decreased over the past three-plus years. The jobs being created don’t pay nearly as much as the ones being lost, and as for the number created, it is still far below what has been needed just to match the college graduates entering the market. That creates an incredible cruch on the lower and middle class that just hasn’t been seen in a while, thus creating an increase in the number of people living below the povewrty line since 2000. The GDP growth also has been lower than the 1990’s. The tax cuts have done nothig to spur real growth in our economy, hence our record deficits.
Also, the number of terrorist attacks around the world has dramaticlly increased since the start of the war in Iraq, and we have created a training ground for the next generation of terrorists with our move into Iraq. The Patriot Act got a nice coat of white paint recently to cover the rust spots that were our civil liberties. We have lost allies and made more enemies.
And are our ports safer than they were prior to 9/11? Do you think airport security, especially cargo security, is better?
We may not be in the second Great Depression, and how dare you think that I want that. Do you think I want my kids to be saddled with the debt this president has accumulated? Do you think I want the job market to be further dimished? What plant are you on? No one wants that for their kids. I work hard to make life better for them and being a Democrat is the best way I can do that.
So take your disengenous claptrap elsewhere. Your claims of my desire to wallow joyously in doom in gloom fall pitifully on deaf ears.
Stop reading bonddad at Dailykos. I know he is your source.
“For most Fed districts, wages increased “modestly” on average. The exception: the Philadelphia region, where businesses said they expected wages to go up faster this year than last year as “firms stepped up counteroffers to workers who were planning to change jobs.”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060315/ap_on_bi_go_ec_fi/economy
Chuck,
Nice try…the story doesn’t give the rate by which wages increased. Wages have increased over the past couple of years, but not at a fast enough rate to offset the rise of inflation. So is a “modest rate” 2%? 3%? If it’s either one of those, which is where it has been recently, that don’t cover a rate of inflation that is at about 4%.
David Ricardo’s Iron Law of Wages states that wages “naturally” tended towards a minimum level corresponding to the subsistence needs of the workers. This “law” is complimented well by the New Deal programs. Today’s robber barrons are enjoying the record breaking stock market without the unsightly bread lines of the past.
If you are think our economy is so bad, you can move to say Germany or France where unemployment is at least twice has high as it is here.
Or how about North Korea where there basically is no economy?
We have the best and strongest economy in the world. It’s growing, has low unemployment and
” - New economic data showing tame inflation and a resilient housing market gave stocks a lift Thursday as investors’ worries about higher prices and rising interest rates eased.”

Why is it that when the radical right wingnuts are on the losing end of a discussion they often fall back on “If you dont’ like it here, leave.”?
Those of us who are bright enough to see the distruction of our country going on before our eyes are also U.S. citizens with the right and obligation to do what we can to stop the fascist forces from taking over every damn thing in sight and turning the rest of us into slaves.
Buster Chuck2, you like being taken over and turned into a zombie marching to the tune of the corporate fat cat aristocrats who are doing their damn best own you and us body and soul, then you might like to try moving to Russia, from whence Bubba Bush gets his advice and support–from V. Putin, whose eyes he looked into and saw his soul, (of all the crap I ever read from a Prez, that’s gotta be the winner). You would feel right at home with gangster gubmint and no civil rights to speak of. Everything is black and white there and you should be right comfortable.
Hey UP-Chuck!
Why don’t you go to the nearest gas station in your Limberger 19 mpg Hummer light up a cigar near the gas pumps and say how GREAT! the economy is! I would love to see the news report…”Dittohead gets the living SH*T BEAT OUT OF HIM BY ANGRY MOB!”
And YOUR HERO COPPED A PLEA BECAUSE HE IS A DRUG ADDLED IDIOT!
