An Appeal
Published by Mike Stark March 15th, 2006 in UncategorizedCallingAllWingnuts is about to live up to its name.
Because talk radio is such a rich vein of wingnuttery, it is easy to limit our efforts to that medium… But to set such limits would be to unnecessarily restrict the universe of Wingnut targets…
CallingAllWingnuts will expand to call all wingnuts. Why not ring up Ann Coulter? Why not get Jonah Goldberg on the record? Wouldn’t it be fun to hear what Jerry Falwell has to say about being bailed out by Reverend Moon?
So here is my appeal… I need somebody with telecom knowledge to explain the ins-and-outs of recording calls through my Vonage phone. Equipment recommendations, set up tips and any other required knowledge would be most appreciated.
(For those that may be unaware, what I plan to do is completely legit and legal in New York State, where I am based.)

Well there are a couple of options depending on what you really want to (i.e. record via your PC soundcard, or via a dediciated adapter, etc.) I haven’t personally done any of these, but here’s a link to where you can find some information on recording vonage calls: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic5347.html
There is also this software the claims to work to gateway provders (i.e. vonage) http://nch.com.au/talk/index.html (have not used this software nor am I affliciated with the company in any way…it just came up in a google search and based on what you specified it looks like it would do what you want.

This is illegal. You are becoming a stalker if you want to make personal phone calls to these people.
Perhaps you should list your own personal phone number so that people can call YOU up and debate you on the issues since you enjoy calling other people’s shows and now wish to call them on their personal phones.
“CallingAllWingnuts will expand to call all wingnuts. Why not ring up Ann Coulter? Why not get Jonah Goldberg on the record? Wouldn’t it be fun to hear what Jerry Falwell has to say about being bailed out by Reverend Moon?”
How else will Mike call these people, if not at home or on their personal cell phones? There is no Ann Coulter radio show or Jonah Goldberg radio show as far as I know.
He is proposing stalking these people which is simply appalling.
Here, Chuck - let me pull up the fainting couch for you. Would you like a mint julep or some smelling salts?
So…do you get this Victorian-era-just-saw-a-naked-piano-leg woozy when Coulter suggests poisoning a Supreme Court justice?
If your poor, delicate fascist sensibiities are threatened, might I recommend some of Dr. Sweeney’s Patent Medicine? It’s very good for wounded dove dispositions like yours.
If your using a mac there’s software called wiretap that records via your sound card, also great for capturing streaming audio. I’m sure something similar is made for a PC.
Looks like this product would work for PC: http://www.av2mp3.com/index.htm

That is the most uneducated response I have seen in awhile. You don’t have anything better to say? You made no point in your comments. They were simply hate filled drivel that no one takes seriously. Absolutely no substance in what you said at all.
Hey Chuckie,
These are people in public positions. For anyone to call Ms Coulter, the would have to find her phone number through normal means.
Since it appears you are very sensitive to people’s privacy and fairness, how do you feel about Ms Coulter’s pleas for all Liberals to be tried as treasonists and executed? This must offend you a great deal. I’m sure that must appeal to your fairness standards. I wouldn’t expect you to call Ms Coulter about her many quotes about doing harm to others so maybe you’ll email Ms Coulter and complain about her many radical, extremist views?
Thanks,
Zappo
No quotes, no links, no nothing. No specific examples.
At least find these quotes to make your point about Coulter.
Please.
Asking for Ann Coulter quotes that express her seething hatred for liberals is like demanding scientific proof that the sun exists.
Just give me one with a link. I don’t link thats too much to ask for.
Hi thee off to RadioShack and get either:
a) A Telephone induction coil - this is a small black cylindrical coil of wire (in a black plastic case) with a suction cup on one end and a cable coming out of the other. You plug the cable into your tape recorder or the microphone input on your sound card and then call dial-a-prayer or somebody and move the coil around your telephone until you find a spot that picks up both ends of the “conversation” and stick it there with the suction cup. Price - a couple of bucks.
or, better,
b) RatShack makes a device just for recording from the telephone. It’s a small plastic box with two phone cables coming out of it and an audio jack mounted on the box. You plug one cable into the wall outlet, the other cable into the phone and run a third cable from the audio jack to your tape recorder or sound card. This device also has another cable coming out of it that can turn your tape recorder on every time the phone is picked up and off when you hang up. Price - $20-30.

Oh my you are SO right…. Whaaa Whaa Whaa! Gentle & kind Ann Coulter is such a class act too….she does not deserve it.

Oh my gosh! Nothing could be easier than finding hateful Ann Coulter quotes…do it yourself you lazy thing!
Steve,
I’m a fan. I’d hate to see you shut down because of a legal snafu. I know you’re on a limited budget, but get some good, sound legal advice (not off the internet) on this before you do it.
I’m not a lawyer but I do have broadcast/production experience, and I think you’d have to give a full, legal disclaimer that the call is being being recorded and by proceeding to speak to you the person being called is granting you unlimited use of the recording for any purpose including broadcasting and posting on the Internet and waives any right to review or approve the final recording forever. (Or, something along those lines.)
That said, I doubt the wingnut will grant the right to record. In fact, they’d be foolish if they did.
Just my opinion.
Steve is right. I wonder if this whole operation of Mike’s is even legal. Recording phone calls AND posting them online. He claims it’s legal ‘where he is based’ which is New York, although he lies so often on the air as to his name and location. If you are going to call in you should have the guts to give your true name and location. But finally, if the other end of the call is not in New York, then that might raise legal issues. And doesn’t Mike hate the NSA wiretapping? Yet he wiretaps all these other people without telling him. HYPOCRISY!
Chuck2,
Here is one link. Took all of .1 seconds to find. Hope the lite helps.
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2001/0111.coulterwisdom.html
I’m not a techy type so if it doesn’t work as a link would someone he me out.
Chuck2 I’ve been reading your post replies for the last couple of days. Very entertaining. Unconvincing, but entertaining. Is it HYPOCRACY for our government to oppose socialism for us, health care, yet promote it for others, Dubai Ports World? just a thought. Remember socialism is defined as the government OWNING a(n)company or industry.
I look forward to your reply.
Dubai Ports World is one of the best companies at running the port operations in the world. I would think we would want the best company possible running port operations. However, I am neither for nor against Dubai Ports World because I recognize I do not have enough information to decide whether they should have run a few port terminals or not. Only the people who have full access to all the information are qualified enough to make that assessment.
No thoughts on our 50 year Cold war against Socialism? Only allow the select, chosen few, to decide while we take a pass on responsibility? If your Know so little about DPW, how can you claim knowledge that they are so well run? Oh, I remember, “Only the people who have full access to all the information are qualified enough to make an assessment.” and since they told you so, I guess thats good enough.
Any thoughts on Ann yet? Or was the link too difficult?
So are you a socialist then TedB?
No Chuck2, I opposed the DPW deal (I fought against socialism) you supported the people who thought it was a good idea, remember? So I guess we might have to wonder about your American, patriotic, capitalistic credentials. If you can reread the posts above, you will see I have used logic, facts, and commonly accepted word definitions - “…words mean things.” Rush L - to further my position. I have not seen your logic, facts, or any definitions from you.
I fail to see how you could possibly conclude that I was a socialist from my stated positions. I mearly pointed out how the Republican Party’s leader (GWB) is now advocating for a socialist dictatorship, Dubai. How would this make me and not you a socialist. Try and remember I OPPOSED THE DEAL, YOU DID NOT.
I’m going to pick up my kids now, so we will have to carry this on another day Chuck2. It’ been fun. I hope you learned a nugget or two.
Mike, thanks for the forum. It’s good to see entrepenuers in the expanding political Bloggosphere.
Chuck2 -
Thanks for your kind words…I know how much trouble it must be to type in a straightjacket, so I do appreciate the herculean effort that it must have taken to craft your response.
Since you seems to be suffering from some form of impairment, allow me to do your research for you and provide a link (in fact, for air fare, I’m willing to fly out and actually click the link for you).

“My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building.”
When asked by the reporter about what Muslims would then do for travel, she replied: “They could use flying carpets.”
“I think our motto should be post-9-11, raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.”
Coulter has stated that women are “not as bright” as men (Hannity and Colmes - 09/23/04), “have no capacity to understand how money is earned” (Politically Incorrect - 02/26/01), and “shouldn’t be in the military” (Hannity and Colmes - 05/05/04).
“We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens’ crème brulée.”
“We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. ”
This really is an exercise in futility. Admit it - there is NOTHING that your masters on the right could do or say to cause you to disown them…NOTHING.
The telephone induction coil is the simplest, most cost-effective recording device. It’s only about $5, plugs into a tape recorder mike input with the male mini hack and the suction cup end can be attached to the receiver end of a telephone … where both ends of the call come through clearly. It’s very reliable; used it often during my radio news career, especially for interviews on the road, and the audio quality was suitable for on-air broadcasts. (And, yes, every one of those subjects knew the conversation was being taped by an identified reporter; some of us in the media did subscribe to a set of ethics, although they seem to be less binding now than then).
So much has been discussed about the legality of recording phone conversations, largely by people who don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. I know of no law, at least in any of the eight states where I have lived and worked, that makes it illegal to record one’s own calls. The issue is how that recording is used. If the recording is broadcast, then that has certain requirements. If it is to be admitted in court, there are other guidelines. It is not illegal to tape a phone conversation and later transcribe it — although you may not necessarily be allowed to use that tape to verify a transcription in court.
Insofar as the laws against harrassment, I cannot comment on when that threshhold may be crossed — although one telephone call to anybody, whether a public or private individual, cannot be construed as harrassment unless it includes a threat. For it to be harrassment, there has to be repetition to the person or entity (one more specific than “wingnut yakkers or pundits”).
Hey TedB, do you own or have bought anything made in China?
If you one even one thing made in China, then I guess you support the communist, oppressive regime that governs that country. At least thats the conclusion one must draw using your logic.
I dont support nor oppose the Port Deal because I dont know enough about all the details, and neither do you.
I did hear on the news, NBC I think, that Dubai is one of the best companies at running port operations.
But again, I am able to recognize when I dont know enough about something. As opposed to you who offer up a knee jerk reaction to something you have no information about.
Why don’t we agree to disagree on that?
How about this for an option: We turn the operation of running the ports over to the Coast Guard, have an expansion of the Coast Guard, and have them run the security?
I trust the Coast Guard much more. At least they are directly accountable to us.
Once in history when we had a dispute on port security, we ended up dumping the tea into the harbor.
*ba-da-dum*
Ah, see what institutionalized liberal biased education gets America? Obey, or get an F. Question the professor, get an F. What happened to free speech? What happened to the individual? I think Brave New World or 1984 is on the horizon.
Well, a majority of the next generation are your hated South Park Republicans. Conservatives with liberal attitudes toward sex and religion. Deal with it.
I see that Chuck-a-Fuck had no further comment on Ann Coulter when finally provided with some direct quotes (which he already KNEW had been made by Coulter - asking for them was just a way to distract and deflect the conversation.) Once he gets them, the conversation is over. Typical right-wing tactics - Sean Hannity would be proud, you have learned from the master……
Why do you people constantly call those who disagree with you names and use profanity so often? That is very childish behavior to me. I do not support extremist comments made by Coulter or any other person on either side of the aisle. Both sides have people that say extreme and/or dumb things.
Chuck, I agree on the name calling.
Intelligent well meaning liberals, stop it stop it stop it!!!!!!!!!!
Conservative @#$@# idiots, stop it stop it stop it!!!!!!!!
There, that should do it.
Chuck 2 Sez:”I did hear on the news, NBC I think, that Dubai is one of the best companies at running port operations.”………….Now this is interesting. Because for years,I’ve heard from republiCON’s that privatization is the way to go. That the US government has NO business running things that can be privatized……With that in mind, why would republiCONS want a business-owned by and operated by a foreign government/the royal family of Dubai- to operate the mangement of our ports? Next thing ya know, the republiCONS will seek the government of Saudi Arabia….Or perhaps the government of France, to operate our Social Security System….Hmmm.
It’s possible someone covered this in the previous comments but I’m kind of in a hurry so I’ll just assume they haven’t. =)
Laws on recording phone conversations differs from state to state. For example, in Rhode Island it is legal to record the conversation if only one party (me) knows it’s being recorded. However in Massachusetts, both parties must be notified.
Here’s the tricky part.
The law that applies is the one in which the “complainer” resides. If I was in Rhode Island and called someone in Massachusetts and I recorded their phone call, and they brought it to court, Massachusetts law would apply.
One “question mark” is whether the area code applies or the physical location of the wounded party applies. For example, what if someone from MA calls someone with a RI number who happens to be on their cellphone sitting in a MA restaurant? Does MA law apply or RI? I have no idea.
I love this site and I’d hate to see it shut down. I’d STRONGLY recommend you consult with a lawyer.
Regards,
Jason
And ignore what DaveM said.
First, the suction cup thing SUCKS. It works by picking up the vibration of the speaker through the plastic case. This means it doesn’t record your own voice worth crap and it often doesn’t record the caller very well either.
If you’re using a phone with the Vonage setup, the second method he suggests is good.
There are actually two models that work just as well as each other with some differences. The $15-ish model is good only for phones with the curly cords (that’s where it plugs in) and does an excellent job. The $25-ish model will work even on cordless models because it sits between the jack and the phone itself. Also, it can be set to record any calls to that phone bus (any phones in the house on that number). That feature probably doesn’t help you any.
But again, I implore you to look at the legal aspects of this a bit closer. Check this out.
