For months we’ve heard the kool-aid distributors on talk radio tell their consumers that the President’s problem is communication…  that he just doesn’t present his message very well…

That criticism haas apparently been effective.  As we know, Scotty has been beamed back to Texas…

Which leaves me wondering…  Now that we’ve retooled the message machine, how will the $450 billion dollar deficit be fixed?  What miracle of messaging is going to fix Iraq?  How will the health care crisis be solved?  What is the plan to bring gas prices back to managable levels?

The conversation ranged pretty far from there - Hannity never answered my question…  but my favorite part of the call was when Hannity asked me why the tax cuts should no be made permanent.

I mispoke a little bit - I said the troops just got a 2.2% pay raise and they deserve better - and the money has to come from federal taxes…

The truth is that the President proposed a 2.2% pay raise in his budget - the lowest since 1994…  I’m not sure what was actually passed.

He kept saying that GWB put $880B in Amercans’ pockets, but how much of that had to be borrowed?

GWB promised never to raise taxes, but he has continually raised spending. Gov’t spending IS taxation Every dollar the govt spends must be recouped through taxes, so if spending increases, then taxes have increased.

    Tax cuts equals borrowing.
    Increased spending equals increased taxation.

    Mike,

I actually flipped to the hate-radio station today and heard your call live :)

I thought you did a great job, although I found myself screaming at the radio “Mike, ask him about the DEFICIT!” once or twice.

But Hannity clearly gave up the fight. You won. Also, a few callers later, another guy named Mike did an awesome job of challenging Sean’s unemployment number quotes. He really sounded like he had taken your “calling all wingnuts 101″ course and really had Sean frustrated as hell!

    Fists up!

You were well intentioned, but out matched for this debate. his figures were easy to combat as you started to elude to the fact that the $300 doesn’t counter rise in costs of everything, cuts in social programs, and thus lower standard of living for average american. Also, the low unemployment is an easy one since the unemployed are not counted after their eligibility runs out. So it’s just lower NEW unemployed people (also not counting new additions to work force like graduates).
Also, I read your statements on how to call a show like Hannity’s and how he likes to brind the argument to his level. Yet you didn’t seem to be prepared for it. I recommend if you are going to be serious about debating them you get a sheet of paper and better prepare yourself for their arguements as they are very predictable. I commend your efforts, but if i was unbias (which i’m not) I would say that you didn’t sound so good and hannity got his point across.

    Haha!
I tuned in just as he hung up on you, and he was LIVID. What a collosal deuche he is. You did good, kid.
Anyone with half a brain listening to that would see your point, and know that hannity was just shilling for the man. So that adds up to, like, 5 people.
    Baby steps…

When he rattles off all the taxes - estate, property tax, …. you know, all those taxes most of us in the real world have never heard of you could counter with a long technical list of tax shelters and corporate accounting tricks . Then just say “how many more ways do you need to hide income?”
Thats also the lie behind “simplify the tax code.” As accountants discover new tricks to hide money the government has to fix all these loopholes. But even then, taxes aren’t complicated for regular folks, just for those trying dodge taxes.

Oh wait we all pay property taxes - i’m dumb. I meant things like setting up mailboxes in Bermuda to avoid taxes.
I wish Sean said home ownership is up. That is a crock of shit. Bank ownership is up. All these families taking out risky interest-only loans are screwed.

Well, maybe there is (at last) progress in Iraq. I have to hope this will work out, given the young (and not-so-young) Americans killed and maimed. These people’s sacrifice should not be in vain. On the other hand, if in the next few months it continues to be clear that there is no good result to be had, we need to have the courage to walk away.

to go along with anonymous at the top- you dont cut taxes at the same time as you’re increasing spending, and at the same time starting incredibly expensive wars (iraq projected to cost between 1-2 trillion). especially when you’re currently in the middle of the largest deficit ever. its not “tax and spend” its “borrow and spend”.

Well done Mike. Might try to work in the fact that real wages are down. Ask him why people of all political stripes aren’t giving him credit for the wonderful economy? The soldier pay tack was right on the money. I love listening to Sean’s arteries hardening when you spike his blood pressure.

And might want to remark that he is rather “liberal” with his personal invective. That would sting.

The above comments about borrowing is another great point. This president has borrowed more money than all other presidents before him *combined*.
