I called Bill Bennett this morning to tell him about Dubya singing the national anthem in Spanish, travelling with a mariachi band and applauding to John Secada’s performance of the national anthem in “Spanglish” at Dubya’s 2001 inaugural ceremony.

Bennett agreed with me that Dubya is a phony - a posturing panderer…

I held over an hour to talk to Mr. Bennett this morning.  I finaly got on at about 8:55.  It’s easy to get conspiratorial over these things, but I must admit that certain things crossed my mind…

Like…

at 8:55 the morning drive is pretty much over…  most people will have left their cars and gone to work…

at 8:55, mine was the last call taken.  He didn’t have time to take any calls after…  Damn!  I really wanted to hear the sweet popping sounds of wingnut heads exploding.

Who knows?  Maybe it took his crack research staff an hour to verify my claim…

Anyway, as Digby said, this is a wedge issue that should be hammered at every single opportunity…

(note to Digby:  if you’ve found your way over here, let me express my thanks.  Aside from providing me with an incredible number of ideas, your writing is some of the most insightful work on the web.)

And if y’all haven’t found his blog yet, go now.

I think one of those claims was corrected as being “secada was singing “America the Beautiful,” not the national anthem.”

i support challenging the right wing media. but sitting on the phone for 1 hour just to get a call though for a few secs of airtime in which they can dump you agree with you or manipulate you is not too reasonable. i hope this website pays well cause there should be a more efficient way to accomplish your objective.

    John X,

We’ve abdicated a huge portion of our media to these lying scumbags. Somebody’s got to stand up to them.

Who knows, maybe you’ll get a day off or so in the not too distant future and you can do your part - hanging out for a morning to get a call in.

In the meantime, Mike deserves our thanks and condemnation. Instead, I think you gave him kind of a sneer and condescension.

I thought Digby of Hullabaloo was female????

Hmmm… I dunno…. could be. I made the assumption from looking at teh “I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore!!” graphic… I could be wrong…

Mike I agree with you. Dubya was trying to reach out to hispanic voters. Wow, this is a huge, huge revelation. Never before has a politican done things to try to reach out to a segment of the population.

John X makes a great point. You wasted over an hour sitting on hold to make an obvious and rather meaningless point. Way to go Mike.

By the way, how do you pay your bills? Just wondering.

    Your friend,

What Mikes doing is holding Bush’s bilingual feet to the right wing fire on live wingnut radio.
This political dig about Bush singing the Star-Spangled Banner in Spanish during the 2000 campaign is basically saying to the 32% backwash that, “Hey, if Bush doesn’t share your prejudices and bigotry like you thought then what makes you think he has your best interests in mind?”

Scott McClellan sought to distance Bush from all this saying “The president can speak Spanish but not that well” implying that he couldn’t sing the anthem even if he wanted to.
So point being, Mike wasted an hour while the white house staff wasted countless man hours and money working on damage control. Thing is though, everyone wasting their time on this stuff knows it matters at the polls.
