Senator Schumer’s staff at the DSCC was kind enough to let me post this.  It is a portion of a recording of the conference call Senator Schumer had (in his capacity as head of the DSCC) with bloggers yesterday.

I think some news is broken here, but I suppose if you parse the statement, there is some wiggle room left.  Senator Schumer says that Senator Lieberman has committed to running as a Democrat - both to Senator Reid and to Senator Schumer.

I suppose that could be parsed to mean that Lieberman is running as a Democrat in the primary, but for once I’m going to leave my cynicism behind and suggest that senaotr Lieberman committed to running in the general as a Democrat or not at all.

Again, I apologize for the audio quality.  Senator Schumer was speaking from his cell phone and the recording came out of a speaker phone.

The audio did not come through too clearly - nonetheless Sen. Schumer’s clearly’s got a lot of explainin’ to do to this old democrat and the party in general. I support Ted Lamont, have contributed to his campaign and intend to keep sending him checks. Oh, and like many other California democrats and those around the country, our support goes directly to him. Thanks to the internet I intend to support worthy candidates directly bypassing the party’s state and national committees. And why not? Because we can and because we clearly cannot trust the DLCC to hear us loud and clear.

Memo to Chuck Schumer and his like-minded crowd: the democratic party belongs to me and countless other democrats and you have no one to blame but yourself and like-minded out of touch democrats in office.

Oh, and in the remote event that Chuck Schumer or others within the so-called national democratic leadership are reading this please know you are all on notice that the game is up and either lead, follow or get the hell out of our way.

With few exceptions the so-called party leadership is an oxymoron.

    Simple as that.

Every solicitation I receive from the DSCC is returned with a short message explaining why I am sending my money directly to the candidates of my choice. The DSCC will never get another dime from me. There are too many ‘democrats’ that refused to filibuster Alito, refused to support the Feingold resolution and refused to stand up against the Bu$h administration. If they cannot defend democracy, I certainly can’t support their campaigns.
I do not approve of the so-called party leaders treatment of sincere Democrats like Paul Hackett. I also do not want to send any money to a man like Joe Lieberman. The fact that he is not vice presdient is only good thing that came from the stolen 2000 election.

I agree with Anne and Denise. On the off chance that the DSCC or the DNC actually cares what truly progressive and liberal voters think, let me add that for every one of us who voices his or her opinion or sends money, there are hundreds of others who feel exactly the same about the Democratic leadership and don’t say anything until they get to the ballot box (or the rigged Diebold machine.)

The party that would not stand behind Russ Feingold or Paul Hackett doesn’t get any enthusiastic support from this progressive. I am not (hear this NOT) interested in making bipartisan agreements and compromises with neocons. I want to vote for someone who will defend liberal values and civil liberties. I do not vote to keep one party or the other in power as I could care less where you claim to belong or who you sauna with at the Congressional gym.

Get with the program Mr. Schumer.

to go along with what other have said here, the most disgusting manifestation of this aspect of the democrats i can think of is when a couple months ago the senate voted to reauthorize the patriot act. only about 15 senators voted against it (though all were democrats and one independant, most democrats voted for it, included the supposed “fringe lefties” like ted kennedy). at this point they had actually read the thing, so they didnt have that excuse. off the top of my head the only ones i remember that voted against it are feingold and levin.
