Dennis Prager: retraction

Last Friday, Prager ran with the “Iran forces Jews to wear yellow badges” story.  I called in to tell him that the story was false, but he never took my call.

So today i called to talk to him about America sacrificing our Constitution upon the altar that is the GWOT.  Before I started that conversation, however, i wanted force Prager to retract the story he irresponsibly ran with last Friday.  To his credit, he did so graciously - even going so far as to say that moving forward he will require redundant sourcing for explosive stories like that one.

Was great to force him to take it back.  I would have liked a lot more time to talk about propoganda, bloodlust and war-mongering, but I guess he was up against a break.

The “Jews must wear yellow badges” story was a huge headline in both the NY Daily News and the NY Post on Friday…I saw no retraction anywhere. Glad that someone was journalistic responsible on this, although it certainly wasn’t the Post.

Hannity has Bob Beckel attempting to “debate” the Swift Boat idiot today, but it’s degenerating into a shoutfest. The Swifties are again smearing Kerry and now Murtha…they have absolutely no shame. It’s a continuation of Tammy Bruce’s vile diatribe, and a warning that the Swifties have not gone away, even though they have been discredited - they will no doubt be recruited in 2008 if Kerry attempt to run again.

Keep up the good work, Mike! You’re a voice of reason and truth in the horrible world of talk radio.

    Hi Mike,

I have lurked around a while and this is my first feedback.

I find Dennis to be one of the greatest tricksters on talk radio - he comes across as some “morality” guy, speeks with a deep sounding “mature” voice but is in reality one of the most hate-filled guys on radio. At least with Medved, you can argue. With Savage, no one including himself and his staff know what is coming. But Prager is a cheap trickster and a shallow person trying to pass as a respectable Republican. I think he is actually a very ordinary and mediocre person who just got lucky with a show for himself on national radio.

My wishes for your continuing work.

    Clevelander.

PS: I got on Medved once but he had on an even more atrocious guest than himself that I had to (unfortunately) take Medved’s side.

Is it possible that someone with whom you disagree on politics could actually be a decent human being, and not hate-filled? Dennis Prager has a radio program on which he interviews people of all political persuasions, and I have found that he treats all with a modicum of respect, even when he has fundamental disagreements with them. We could use more people like Dennis, who can conduct an adult discussion on complex topics, without resorting to namecalling.

doughy: sure - there are plenty of people with which I disagree and consider to be decent people… But Dennis - Mr. Civility - spends way too much time telling us how evil and lacking in morality the “left” in this country is. Almost immediately after the attacks of 9/11, talk radio - including your beloved Dennis Prager - began using it to demonize their political opponents.

at a time when America could have come together as one to face incredibly difficult problems, Mr. Prager and others chose to divide the country by demonizing democrats. I think Mr. Prager is actually one of the more vile of the talk radio creeps because, like Bill O’Reilly, he does have a “everyman” appeal. He is very good at concealing his efforts behind a smooth voice and cool rhetoric.

but I’m wondering - where in this post did you see me call him a name? To the contrary, I called him gracious and responsible. I praised him here - because I am willing to be honest and fair in my assessment of his individual action - even if I loathe his overall personna and body of work.

First, my post made reference to the comment in the one that preceded it. I am a centrist, and am all in favor of uniting this country, and I’ll admit that’s alot harder these days. It would help with the discussion to keep the hot rhetoric out of the debate, and when all else has been tried, simply agree to diagree.

Further, Savage, Hannity, Coulter, Bruce, etc. couldn’t hold Dennis’ coat in a debate. They’re all bright, like Al Franken. Thoguh, they’re not really as good at clarifying issues, as at winning the argument, while making the opponent look stupid. Dennis has an uncanny ability to conduct interesting long form interviews / debate with the best thinkers from the opposing point of view. And that’s why I listen to his show with an open mind.

Great, important issues desreve the time to examine the best arguments of the opposing posiitons. Even with the benefit of Blogs, talk radio, TV, and our best efforts, the loudest voices, not the clearest thinkers, often garner the most attention.

If what I’ve siad doesn’t make sense, please let me know.

a break had nothing to do with it. you already called him on his nonsense once. he wasn’t going to let you do it twice in the same show.

    To doughface:

I personally find it disingenous on the part of Prager, Medved and Savage to support the “right-wing” in this country as it was only a slightly different form of the same in Germany that caused the destruction of their ancestors. I think the natural home of Jews is within the Democratic party. 90% of the Jews in this country tend to vote Democratic.

I think Prager is really really a crook. Mike has pulled the rug from under his feet on more than a couple of occassions (you can find his calls in the archive section). He immediately disconnects such calls giving the BS that he prefers clarity to agreement.

It is because Christians are a majority in the US that he goes about talking of Judeo-Christian values. I dont think there can be any point of agreement obetween non-believers and monotheists - be they Christian or Muslim. The theology of both say that their own messengers (JC or Mohammed) is God’s last messenger for all of mankind for all time to come. Huh…so convenient for believers and so intolerant of non-believers. I cannot for the life of me understand how Prager can find common ground with a philosophy which ultimately wants his conversion. That is why I have such low regard for him.

I believe that had the US been predominantly Buddhist/Hindu, Prager would have invented a new class of philosophy called Judeo-Buddhist/Hindu philosophy and made his living talking about that.
