Hannity & Hypocrisy

There is a surprise at the beginning of this call…  Hopefully I’ll come back with some good anthropological data from the land of wingnuts.  I haven’t made the trip official yet - it’s tough to plan that far out when you’ve got an infant, but I’m gonna do my best.

Once past the intro, we get to the good stuff.  I asked Hannity why he went after Reid so aggressively when he defended Tom Delay when Delay went on a $70,000 vacation to Scotland on Jack Abramoff’s dime…  then I asked him why he put the dude that is suing Michael Moore on his show…  He’s suing for $85 million because he didn’t like Moore’s movie!  Man, talk about frivilous lawsuits clogging our courts!

I truly feel sorry for Sgt. Peter Damon…he doesnt have a case.

NBC had the rights to the vid…they gave it to Moore sans caveat.

In this type of lawsuit, the plaintiff must show malice…and that wont happen.

I remember the scene, and didnt feel that Moore was putting words into Damon’s mouth…Moore was making a point about the costs of this illegal war.

The only people he showed malice to were the ones in the administation, and they as public figures cant sue.

Btw, James Nichols sued Moore after Bowling for Columbine was released…he didnt like his portrayal in that film either. Dont think that lawsuit got that far either.

I just love the way heil hannity spits venom when he says the word “lib”

About this jingoistic concert tour he’s rabidly promoting…I hope that some responsible non-partisan party (AG or prosecutor, independent auditor) takes a good look at the books after it’s all over. It’s real easy to raise a shitload of money for the deceased military offspring’s college funds (who’s responsible for them being deceased?), but I sure hope Sean and his minions are clean as a hound’s tooth in an post concert audit. And if he’s not, let’s bring this phony to his knees, and have him share a cell with Kenny Boy. It would be a beautiful thing.

over at talkingpointsmemo.com theyve been covering the reid “scandal” in a good amount of detail (or rather some apperantly horrible reporting by the ap on the scandal). i wasnt too interested so i only scanned what they said, but apperantly reid took free boxing tickets from someone or an organization that had an interest in something reid was going to vote on. so that looks a little bad, but then they go on to say that reid actually voted against the special interest’s wishes. the only way i figure reid could have been influenced by the free tickets is if his seat was uncomfortable or the popcorn was stale or something (ie the free gift made him dislike the giver, or more likely reid was uninfluenced at all and was gonna vote that way anyways). its shocking thats the best they can do. kind of reminds me of the iran-forcing-jews-to-wear-yellow-stars story (which, if you missed it, was a complete fabrication), in that the facts dont matter, only allegations do. a while from now some people may have in the back of their minds “hm, didnt reid do something vaguely unethical once?”, when really, if this is the best they can do, reid must be a saint.

MAN! Shawn won,you lost. You cannot beat him.

4 grand juries in 3 days. And you think that right?

Regarding the post above by Orihd that said
“kind of reminds me of the iran-forcing-jews-to-wear-yellow-stars story (which, if you missed it, was a complete fabrication)”

I think Hannity still believes this one is true, he said something about it again the other day.

Here is a link to an article that rebuts the story.

    http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1145961389144&pagename=JPost/JPArticle/Printer

Iran expert Menashe Amir on Sunday traced incorrect reports about a proposed Iranian uniform law to earlier debate on the measure.

According to erroneous articles - “totally false” in the words of Amir - Iran was preparing to require Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians to wear colored ribbons on their clothing to distinguish them from Muslims….

I’d trust this source more than Hannity, it’s from the Jerusalem Post. :)

    Hey Red State WV,

You think it’s right that convicted Felon Jack Abramoff took Tom Delay on a Golf Outing to St. Andrews? I think they said they were going to meet people in the Scottish Parliament. Too Bad the Parliament was not in session when they went.

If you want to defend theose liars, go ahead.

I find it much easier to defend the actions of Harry Reid. he took boxing passes (which were not available for sale), from people who had an interest in legislation that would be before the Senate. Then he voted AGAINST the interests of the people who gave him the boxing passes. Seems like he wasn’t influenced to me.

To start with, I do wonder why they needed 4 grand juries. I wouldnt feel right if they did me like that.

    But to answer the question:

No I wont, and the Republican party doesnt either. Why do I say that? The Republican party forces those in leadership positions to step down if indicted, something the Democratic party doesnt do.

So, when William Jefferson “D” Louisiana is indicted, he will just keep right on.When and if Alan Mollohan, who has funneled millions to non-profit organizations and is far far richer than he was when he first won election, is indicted, he will stay right on the ethics commish.

  8. 8 Ezsuds81

    Red state WV,

I think you need to check your “facts”.

William Jefferson has been asked by Nancy Pelosi to immediately resign from the House Ways and Means Committee. He was asked to do that, even though he had not yet been indicted.

Allan Mollohan stepped away from the Ethics committee , after being requested to do so by Nancy Pelosi.

Since the Democrat leader addressed the issues with the congressmen before the were indicted, I think it’s a stretch to say that the Dems are not going to deal with these situations in a forthright manner.

I don’t even reall y think you want to discuss the House Ethics committeee itself, considering what has happened to it with the Republicans running the House. What did they do to Duke Cunningham before he was indicted? What have they done to Bob Ney?

That’s right, they didn’t do a damn thing!

  9. 9 red state WV!

I had not heard about Mollohans resignation. He gets a little credit for that.

And even though William Jefferson hasnt been indicted, he IS on video.I will be very surprized if he doesnt go to jail.

Duke is right where he belongs.

I will not stick up for bad people. And I believe there are bad people on both sides. There always has been, thee likely always will be.

All we can REALLY do is worry about our own congressman.

I am not so partisan that I wont say when a Republicans has done wrong.

I dont think anyone should be that partisan. It does the country no good whatsoever.

  10. 10 orihd

and red state wv, you can have some credit for not being that partisan. unfortunately the republican party is that partisan. thats why phase two of the senate investigation into wmd (the phase that addresses whether the administration misrepresented the intelligence) has been stonewalled for over two years, and its why the republicans wont let the nsa warrantless domestic surveillance investigation go forward. both of those are impeachable offenses, and there are other examples (though those might be the worst). this partisanship is why most republicans still support the long list of corrupt republican congressmen, whereas i havent seen much of any support for jefferson on the democratic side (maybe im not reading the right places or something though–if you had scrolled down about 4-5 posts you wouldve seen mike’s take on it, for instance, and that site i mentioned in my earlier comment has jefferson among the “hot topics” right up there with jack abramoff and duke cunningham).

Well, I dont really think the NSA wiretapping deal is going anywhere,if it is wrong, why havent any Dems gone of the floor and on record and called for the prez to stop it? And again, it is ONLY on international calls, and only calls from someplace like Iran to or from America. You guys lose sight of the fact that this doesnt affect 99.99999% of the calls made. Some Dems accuse the prez of not doing enough before 911, now he does too much.I just dont have a problem with it,and I dare say no one on this site calls Iran or UAE.

I do know that during WWII, every piece of mail and every package going in and out of the U.S. was searched. Every communication going in and out of the U.S. was listened in on.

And I myself do not have a problem with the NSA program, BUT! if we find out that it is being used to bust drug dealers or child molesters or other “non-terror related crimes, then I do have a problem with it, not that I care about these people, but that would be a MAJOR shift in how we enforce the law.

  12. 12 Iriseon

The NSA program can’t be used on citizens for non-terror related information. The data is not actionable. What most liberals and libertarians care about is the administration moving the goal-posts for the definition of terrorist or terrorism. The actions taken in the current age concerning espionage and war conduct is actually very tame and tepid in the context of history. Meh, but so what?

As for Reid, he’s been very murky, and I wouldn’t suggest you folks trying to stick up for him. This ticket business is peanuts and won’t go anywhere, but Reid himself is deep in it; he’s been investigated by members of his own party as a possible liability. That being said, there’s no reason for him to step down or anything until a real & substantial conviction or inditement occurs, if ever. I’m warning you, defend him for this if you must, but be wary of Harry Reid; he’s taken Ambramoff money too. (Remember Patrick Kennedy D-RI? Supposedly he’s received the most Ambramoff/Indian gambling interests money out of all recipients and now there’s an Indian casnio being debated in RI while he’s going into rehab for the second time in 5 months. Both parties need to clean the scum.)

  13. 13 red state WV!

“both parties need to clean the scum”

    true true!

but the extreme partisanship prevents that from happening.

anyone that buys into this “culture of corruption” buzzword really has the blinders on. corruption is not party particular.

  14. 14 orihd

    red state,
the fundamental problem with the nsa program is that there is absolutely no oversight of it (other than within the nsa), so you’re really taking bush’s word for it when he says its only international (and i strongly suspect its much broader, because gonzales said the reason for bypassing fisa was that too much paperwork slowed down investigations, and that suggests that there’s a huge amount of warrants they would need, so probably this is datamining, in which it would be impossible to go to fisa for each warrant. also have you heard about “total information awareness”? i think that speaks to their motives). also they deliberately use the word “international” to obfuscate–international surviellance doesnt need a warrant, its only when american citizens are involved that it does. so its the domestic part of the surveillance that is the problem.

im sure there were prior abuses of presidential power, and worse ones too, but i dont think this argument stand up either. first off, during WW2 and the civil war our country’s survival was threatened, in the war on terrorism all the terrorists can do is kill x amount of civillians, they cant actually threaten the state. besides that, with the passage of fisa in 1978 theres clear legislative intent to go along with the constitution.

“Some Dems accuse the prez of not doing enough before 911, now he does too much.”

he didnt do enough before 911, and hes still not doing enough. he still hasnt instituted the recommendations of the 911 commission (last fall they gave him a “report card” on readiness and he failed in many areas). and doesnt it give you pause when you realize fema is part of homeland security? as in, if bush really cared about national security why would micheal brown be the head of fema? and we knew about katrina a while in advance. also, the nsa program isnt helping keep you safe–it produces far too many false leads for it to be useful, according to the fbi.

“BUT! if we find out that it is being used to bust drug dealers or child molesters or other “non-terror related crimes, then I do have a problem with it,”

good point, i dunno what they use this program for, but they have bragged about using the patriot act to catch non-terrorism crimes, such as child molesters.

lastly, id like to make a point i read somewhere: our military has been willing to sacrifice millions of lives to protect the freedoms we now have, what makes civillian lives so much more valuable that we are willing to give up those very freedoms when a comparatively very small number of civillians die? or to put it another way, why shouldnt civillians be willing to make a similar (though much smaller) sacfrice to protect freedom? the fourth ammendment is important.

    iriseon,
reid might be unethical i dunno, but he wasnt in this instance. and taking money from jack abramoff is not the same as taking money from the tribes he swindled, nor is taking money unethical if its not a bribe .

  15. 15 red state WV!

orihd: about the WWII nations survival VS. terrorists killing X civys.

I think that to the relative of those killed in 911, that their relatives are just as important as anything in the world.

with the NSA program, I just dont think we are going to hear a big public outcry about it. UNLESS is is being used for non-terror purposes.

the bottom line is most people are not bothered by it.

  16. 16 orihd

“the bottom line is most people are not bothered by it”

i agree. however, the trouble is, most germans werent bothered by the onset of fascism in the 30s. that doesnt mean it was right (though germany in the 30’s was obviously worse, i dont mean to equate the two). most people should be bothered by it.

and plenty of families of the victims of 911 still care about fundamental rights.
