I kicked Jed Babbin’s ass
Published by Mike Stark June 21st, 2006 in Uncategorized(The audio here sucks - I’ll try to catch a rebroadcast later tonight and get better sound for y’all… till then, this is the best I can do…)
Babbin was guest hosting for Medved. For context, Babbin wrote a piece that I need to read. It makes the only serious argument I’ve ever heard about the war: that we just cannot co-exist with islamic fundamentalists and we should confront them now while they are weak. To me, that argument needs to be taken seriously - if people do not hide their hatred of your culture and desire to kill you, why doesn’t it make sense to take them out? Now I know that the problem with that theory is that the actual number of people that want to kill us is small when compared to the overall populations and that by engaging in occupation, we feed their numbers. That said, I’m not sure what the “solution” is…
Also for reference, earlier in the show, Babbin claimed Murtha was the crazy uncle you kept in your attic.
Now frankly, I’m surprised I got this much packed into a single call. I’ll let the transcript do the talking:
…
Stark: I just wanted to say that I spent four years in the Marines and I play softball with a guy that just got back from Tikrit who is in the Army and I asked him what he thought of the war. He said: well, we removed Saddam, we’ve established that there’s no WMD, there’s no threat… we shouldn’t be there anymore. We should get out of there. And I said: Well, you know you’re still being shot at. He said: If we invaded Canada and occupied them, they’d still be shooting at us three years later.
But the larger question to me is… the people you are supporting in this told us that there was no doubt that there was WMD and they knew exactly where they were, they said that Iraqi oil income would pay for the war and it wouldn’t last six months, they told us three years ago the mission was accomplished… These people went to the Gomer Pyle school of military leadership and you want us to support them and not bring in any new blood or any new thought… meanwhile the people benefiting from this? Halliburton’s stock is up 600% and oil companies made more money in the last quarter than any other company in the history of the world.
Babbin: blah cliche blah blah
Stark: I guess my question to you is that we’ve got a battle of competing crazy uncles to use your phrasology. Are you going to support the people that went to the Gomer Pyle school of military leadership or are you going to support John Kerry who has seen war? are you going to support John Murtha who has seen war? Are you going to support people who have made careers out of the military? Nobody on your sie - none of the people you are supporting have made careers out of the military…
Babbin: Really? Oh yeah? How about Richard Meyers, how ’bout Peter Pace, how ’bout Jim Conway, how ’bout George Casey? Oh, C’mon… Mike, you are full of baloney. The people you are talking about… John Kerry didn’t make a career in the military - he made a career out of protesting the military and calling the military war criminals. That’s John Kerry.
Stark: The same man killed a man with his own hands in defense of this country.
Babbin: Well, how ’bout Peter Pace, how ’bout Tom McEnerny how ’bout all of the people I talk to all the time?
Stark: They are still all on the payroll and would be court-marshalled if they said anything different - or not promoted… (ed. like Shinseki)
Babbin: (Stark is cut off) …John Kerry is a phony, John Kerry is a coward… Jack Murtha has lost his marbles….

Not gonna lie, I read the transcript first and thought you made up his responses. They seem like something Stephen Colbert would say as a joke.
I heard this live as I drove to work. The problem I had is I don’t know exactly who were the men he was listing. Of course, the Host brought it down to ad hominems. He can’t attack the points brought up by Kerry and Murtha, so it’s off to insulting them.
There are 4 dozen men and women running as Democrats this year that served in the Iraq war. It’ll be interesting to see the swift boating that occurs to these people. I think Conservatives now have no shame in denigrating military service when it suits them. It has now become the standard operating procedures for right wing hacks and blogs.
John Kerry did not call the military War Criminals. He stated that men admitted to committing war crimes. Kerry stated he did acts himself that were legal under the US, but in his opinion violated the laws of war. Stating the reality of the situation is not insulting the military. It’s the flaws that brings down the military, not the person that points out the flaws.
Mike,
The New York State Teacher’s Retirement System has huge equity holdings in the oil companies. Their number one investment for the pension security of our fine teachers is in Exxon. Maybe they started the war?
They also own Halliburton stock too…..
WMD’s? AFP is reporting something…but I’m sure it’s all made up gobbledy-gook, cooked up by Halliburton execs and Pension Fund managers from New York State.
Pete
Mike,
I just discovered your site after hearing about you on a Podcast of Thom Hartman’s show that is about 3 weeks old. What you’re doing is AWESOME. Keep it up! Especially the harassment of Rush. But you can’t do it alone. You’ll have to lead any army!
I think you messed up a bit when you brought up John Kerry. It’s sooo easy for them to dismiss him. All they have to do is fall back on the multimillion dollar swiftboat campaign, which did nothing to change votes but wingnut listeners back it 100%.
Bring up the people who are coming back from the Iraq war and running for office as members of the “opposition” party.
Otherwise this was a great call. Sadly, most people listening to this show and taking the host seriously don’t hear the same words that came out of your mouth.
