Really important stuff
Published by Mike Stark June 26th, 2006 in UncategorizedOK, so what’s going on in the world these days?
A quick perusal of the headlines says:
- the Iraqi government is looking for a route to reconciliation and amnesty
- Abramoff, Norquist and multitudes of Republicans were complicit in a scheme to use non-profits as money-laundering vehicles.
- hmmm, wasn’t the Lincoln Bedroom, but it looks like Abramoff was selling White House access.
- the Pentagon has adopted the democrats plan for troop withdrawel…
So which of those is the hot topic on Dennis Prager’s radio show?
You, my saavy readers, have surely guessed right: flag burning.
Never mind that George W. Bush was caught red-handed desecrating the flag.

I can’t figure out this “flag burning issue” any farther than i don’t think its an issue at all. My main problem with it as an issue is how ironic and circular the logic used by both sides is. The “pro-flag burning” side believes it is their right to desecrate a flag that represents their right to do so. The “anti-flag burning” camp believes people should not be free to burn a flag because it represents their freedom (to burn flags). Both these ideas are unwieldy and pretty much represent my distaste for this issue. In the end i don’t think it is worthwhile to be wasting time discussing a constitutional amendment.
By the way, nice call Mike. I like how apolitical you were and how you took Bush head on. I’m curious what your view on this issue is, and I guess (and hope) its similar to mine: This isn’t an issue at all.
Another nice call Mike! It was weird to actually see a host let you make your point without interrupting you or shouting over you. To me, reasoned discussion makes for a more enjoyable listening experience. I also feel better informed after hearing an exchange like this.
what?? another wingnut that never served his country??? really? who knew?
It felt you caught him off guard. You took a patriotic view point of the flag and what it represents. Then you zinged him stating that signing a flag is descration. I too have the opinion that many that burn the US Flag burn what represents their right to burn it. However, so long as it’s THEIR flag and they violate no fire codes, burn it. The VFW disposes of flags in similar, though more respectful, manner.
What qualifies as desecration - Using the flag in a commercial endeavor, designed on a jacket? What qualifies as the flag - manufactured cloth, or the plastic variety and July 4th newspaper printings? Should state flags be given the same protection?
I disagree about George Bush not serving his country. Fair or fowl Bush, like Dan Quayle, served in the military. Bush, for two years, did outstanding in his training based on observations of his training records. It was the last 2 years he fell off the merry go round and what is now bringing up all these questions. Yes he used it to avoid the war, he had that luxery. Many that went to college had that luxery. Want something insidious? The men that fired their weapons into the crowd at Kent state - how many of them even got one deferment? Majority of the National Guard was still lower economic class, firing at a crowd of priviledged students. I’m digressing though.
It’s easy to be an empty suit in the military, even today in drawdown (in the navy). Bush would not have been the first nor the last. However, we do a disservice. Praise Bush for his first 2 years, then be ashamed of his last 2-3 years.
