A new tactic from Medved
Published by Mike Stark July 5th, 2006 in UncategorizedHe was talking about flag burning. I suggested that I might make a trip to South Carolina State Capitol with a Confederate Flag and have my dog poop on it. I was wondering if desecrating the rascist’s flag should be made illegal. And what if I started burning the Declaration of Independence? Should we pass a law against that?
Medved was put in a quandary. He couldn’t very well say that it should be ok for my dog to poop on the rascist flag, but he couldn’t admit that outlawing desecration of the flag was a slippery slope either.
Instead he did something remarkable - something I’m not sure I’ve ever witnessed.
He pretended that I said I wanted my dog to poop inside the state capitol - where it would be illegal.
That was some pretty fancy obtuseness…

Two things are clear from your call. First, the flag burning amendment is a slippery slope (what else needs to be protected?). Second, Michael Medved really didn’t want to talk about it!
Medved had nothing! That was embarrasing for him.
Keep up the good work Mike.
I’m even from the “South” so I don’t mind you making the analogy.
I called at the bottom of the hour (at the 50 minute mark, Charles from San Diego) and gave other points.
Obviously it would be illegal to burn ANYTHING in public that would violate firecodes, free speech or not. My points however dealt with the DEFINITION of what qualifies as desecration and the DEFINITION of what qualifies as the flag. Michael turned weasely and said that you shouldn’t be specific until laws were passed. I pointed out that you then turn it back over to the same judges they were claiming this amendment by-passed.
Put it this way: Am I desecrating the US Flag if I burn a flag that has 12 stripes and 49 stars? What if I drew a picture of a burning flag? What if I distribute a video of another person OUTSIDE the US burning a US Flag. The amendment would be pointless. The slippery slope would then be to introduce other symbols of the US to be protected against desecration and go on from there.
These guys are so adamant that one not burn flags made in Communist China by communists?
What kind of Real Amurrikans are they?
This is great! In this instance you had a catch 22 waiting for them. I wish it could be done for every issue. I think it’s very telling that he wouldn’t condemn the confederate naval battle flag (stars/bars) so he wouldn’t alienate his listeners. The flag itself, to me, doesn’t represent racism, but the way it’s been used in the past century is to promote racist causes, so it has become a symbol of racism, but I don’t think it started out that way. But, what do I know, I wasn’t there.
Anyway, if every call was like this, and the Horowitz one above, then we’d have it made because of you.
