Bennet hearts Lieberman
Published by Mike Stark July 7th, 2006 in UncategorizedHad a long and reasonable discussion with Bill Bennett this morning about Ned Lamont and the Lieberman challenge.
He was asking for opinions of the debate. I told him that I thought Lamont reminded me of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington… He’s not a professional politician at all - he didn’t even know enough to look into the cameras last night.
The conversation took off from that point, but what I’m happiest about was pointing to all the other Democrats that support the war that haven’t been primaried. I think it’s important to defuse the narrative that the right is trying to form around the idea that the Democratic Party has become beholden to the far left to the extent of demanding ideological purity.
We don’t need ideological purity. If you look at the records of Nelson, Nelson, Lincoln, Bayh and Biden - amongst others - you’ll find a ton of various kinds of conservatism. Some are military hawks, others are simply corporatists. But they all caucus with the Democrats while they are in the Senate and when they do their media appearances. Lieberman, on the other hand, caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate, but with Britt Hume and Sean Hannity in his media appearances.
Finally, something I didn’t note in the call but should have is the fact that Lieberman is from Connecticut. If Nelson from Nebraska felt the need to stray off the reservation once in a while, well, the violation would have the mitigating circumstance of his origins. Democrats have to consider themselves lucky to have a Dem Senator from Nebraska… But CT? No… in this case, Lieberman has been taking positions that are simply anethema to his constituency…

The co-host chimes in after your call to say that this Lamont challenge is fueled by the left’s lust for power. It’s Lieberman’s threat to run as an independant that’s the real power grab here. Settling for Lieberman, Zell Miller types just sets us up for “straight from the donkey’s mouth” trash talking on Fox News.
And I’m sure the AFL/CIO will come around to Lamont if elected just as I’m sure he’d reach out to them.
Very Nice job Mike! Darth Zinn said the same thing I was thinking. If this was about keeping the power the Dem’s have (What power would that be??? ), why would they be pushing for a primary challenge of a 3 term incumbent Senator? Seniority wise, even if you defeat the incumbent in the primary, and win the general, you now have a Senator with no seniority. Clearly the person seeking to hold power is Lieberman. Why else would he collect signatures to be on the ballot as an independent, in case he loses the Democratic primary?
If that isn’t a sign of someone doing everything he can to hold power, I don’t know what iS.
