I’ve long believed that if we had rebuilt Afghanistan after they fought a war against the Soviets for us, that we would have crowded Al Qaeda out and the Taliban would never have been able to assume power.  If we had rebuilt their bombed out roads, hospitals and schools, if we had provided vaccines, agricultural help and fiexed some of their infrastructure…  if we had just met basic levels of decency…  well, if we had done that, Osama bin Laden wouldn’t have been able to purchase the loyalty and good-will of the Afghanis.

Similarly, if we gave 1/2 the amount we give to Israel in military aid every year to the Palistinians - in the form of medical, infrastructure, housing and other humanitarian aid… well, Hamas and Hezbollah would be crowded out of the picture.

Instead, our political leaders listen to the loudest, and most ignorant, mouths…  the Rush Limbaughs, Sean Hannitys and Bill O’Reillys…  the stupid bastards that complain every time a nickel of foreign aid is spent.  Because, you know…  redistribution of wealth costs them so much money.

Well, how’s 1 trillion dollars for war in Iraq working out? And god knows how much for Afghanistan…  and how many terrorists are being bred out of the ashes of Lebanon?

O’Really’s a vegetable. How some people cannot see he’s in the GOP’s pocket is amazing. He hammers the left every day, then maybe once a month dedicates a single segment on a minor topic he disagrees with Bush on and calls himself a moderate.

  2. 2 ThankMe

If we were only nice to them, they wouldn’t want to kill us!
That’s brilliant, Mike! Why didn’t I think of that!

    Thank me!

  3. 3 Mike Stark

Pretty funny, ThankMe… Now tell me why it’s not true.

Who have we been “nice” to that wants to kill us?

  4. 4 ThankMe

So, you’re serious? Being nice to all the IslamoNazis in the world is the solution? Where should I start? Everything you said is extremely stupid! Go through it line for line! Do you really believe all of that crap? Amazing!

    Thank me!

The USA already gives out millions of dollars in aid to countries all over the world via a controlled plan. But that would pale in comparison if your idea was put into effect.

Give money to terrorists? Take a guess how many countries, people and terrorists will be lining up for their “fair share” of the handouts. And the media would be harping on every situation they could find that was not in their opinion “fair”.

thankme sounds a little 2 much like coulter

  7. 7 Mike Stark

    ThankMe:

Are you purposely dense? Or are you truly an imbecile?

If you are “nice” before the “Islamofascists” get there, they don’t ever get a foothold. We win the hearts and minds.

hezbollah, Hamas, and Al Qaeda (and radical Islamists of other stripes) gain followings because in our absence, they are able to provide food, jobs, schools and other services…

If we are already providing them, they don’t win the hearts and minds - because after all, all other things equal, people like listening to music, dating, watching movies and drinking beer…

  8. 8 ThankMe

I sound like Coulter? Why, I’m welcome, Isaac!

    Thank me! LOL!

    thankme…
    your schtik gets old quick.

    find a new one.

    No, thank me!

    Mike,

I have to disagree with you here. I don’t think anything we could have done would keep certain peoples from trending towards fundamentalist rule.

That whole area is full of nutty homicidal religious folk of different stripes, Israel included. The best thing for America would be, in my opinion, to withdraw support from all parties and let them kill each other if thats what happens.

We can’t control that area, nobody can, and trying to is just stupid.

  11. 11 Independent Erik

Willis, I know whatya mean. Religious loons that vote for presidential candidates based on important issues, like gay marriage, are frightening.

“The United States provided more than $400 million in development aid to the Palestinian territories last year, all of it channeled through nongovernmental organizations and U.N. agencies rather than the governing Palestinian Authority.”

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/25/AR2006022501415.html

    $400 million Mike.

I guess that’s not enough though. We are still not giving away enough money in your opinion.

Shouldn’t you be arguing that $400 million a year be spent here in America?

  13. 13 Mike Stark

hmmm… lessee… 400 million channeled through layer after layer of bureaucracy, vs 2 billion in direct military aid to Israel… for every $1 they push through their crony network, Israel get’s $5 they can use to blow me up…

So I’m a Palistinian and Israel just blew up my apartment complex with one of those American made and expedited bombs… I’ve lost everything - maybe even a child…

Hezbollah rebuilds my house, cares for my kids during the day so I can work and does their best to treat my wife’s wounds from the bombing… but, alas, she dies also…

who’s side am I on now?

  14. 14 Yakki

Kinda hard to argue with that logic Mike. Oh wait…. when did logic ever fit in the equation?

People seem to forget how loyalty is bought. Folks who are down,in need with no way out(and none offered by the “moral” countries) get it however they can. Should be simple to understand really. Survival. It’s one hell of a lot stronger than platitudes.

We hung Afghanistan up to dry. We used them and left them in a lurch. What else were they going to do? Starve? In a country that(during that time) their economy was based on narcotics? What was the figure(old news, short memory so I may be mistaken here) 70%? That much of the money that went into Afghanis pockets from drugs. After we let them sink, the Taliban took over and killed the poppy production. Which was all to the good for our moral face. You know, the one we show to the rest of the world whilst we screw everybody we can reach with our gigantic penis of freedom.

So how could it have hurt for us to help them? Especially after we used them to do our fighting. Hell, many Conservatives hold Reagan up as the killer of the cold war! At least helping the Afghans then,we’d have been helping some folks who actually done something more than eat jelly beans and talk out his arse.

    (Please excuse the profanity Mike.)

IIRC, that 2 billion to Israel is in exchange for releasing land secured legally in an aggressive war. Egypt gets its oil from the Sinai penninsula, Israel gets US financial benefits for a set number of years. Yes, I could actually look up the numbers but I’m too lazy. I’m not for Israel blowing up infrastructure that assists civilian populations, but damned if I think a country should be attacked by another government without retaliating.

However, Mike, you’re spot on about helping developing nations suffering. Sadly, why aid Afghanistan if there’s no corporate benefit? Sure, it would help us in the long run, but that’s WAY beyond next quarter’s earning. It’s best for the UN to do this aid. Let not one country be seen as the benefactor.

  16. 16 Yakki

“It’s best for the UN to do this aid. Let not one country be seen as the benefactor.”

    True that.

But then,we’d have the same kind of people hollering about how crooked the UN is(which,on many levels it is). I agree with you though. An end to all the under-table deals and secret plans would be nice. Support ourselves I say,and help everybody if we can. No favorites.

Really though I think it’s a kind of “attention whore” thing. When things go well we want to be seen as the benefactors, but when it goes tits up we wash our hands. The problem with that IMO is we can’t change history. What we do,or don’t do,is gonna haunt us for a long time.

C’mon, I want to see the Hannity Klan rally. Get w/ the pictures and video pleezzze.

Oh, and BTW to “Thankme” - I used to say that same phrase a lot. When I was 14 years old. No you can get back to slobin on the knobin. LOL No no no no thank you.

  18. 18 markovits

    Um Mike,

If Israel blew up my apartment complex, I would wonder why. If I then found out they blew it up because some Hezbollah terrorists had just blown up a marketplace in Israel the day before, I would tell Hezbollah not to get near anyone in my family and tell them all to go to hell for bringing this destruction on my home because of their terrorist attacks.

  19. 19 Mike Stark

    Oh good, marko…

So when the trade centers were blown up, you asked yourself why, right? And when you found out that Osam’s beef was with the United States maintaining bases in Saudi Arabia and propping up their corrupt royal family - while the vast majority of Saudis lived in squalor… well, you decided to tell America you were leaving because you didn’t want people that would do that anywhere near your family, right?

because you are a real deep thinker, huh? more like Corporal markovits in the Hannity Army…

why do I get the feeling your name is really Wilkow?

  20. 20 cosmo

I’ll say it again…it’s like shooting fish in a barrel, Mike :)

  21. 21 markovits

    Um no Mike.

The discussion has nothing to with the world trade center or Osama bin laden. Why have you tried to distract the discussion for? We are talking about the current conflict in the mid east, not Osama bin laden. I think that your last post would be considered the logical fallacy of the red herring, which is introducing an argument that has nothing to do with the proceding argument to get the discussion off course. I dont think they like red herrings in law school.

  22. 22 Mike Stark

You know, markov (same IP as chuck2), I only post your shit to make fun of you.

Because even the most retarded wingnut has to realize that the logical device I used was called an analogy, or perhaps, a simile…

If you can’t see the parallels between the two situations, you are a very ugly penguin.

Oh - there ya go, just for you, I made a “red herring” - with a little bit of ad homimem thrown in for spice… Now we’ll argue about whether or not you are a penguin - something that has nothing at all to do with the original argument.

  23. 23 Lee

Mike, you’re right on the mark re: Hezbollah. A Lebanese man - adored by everyone where I work - makes daily pickups for a local freight forwarder. We spoke about the situation in Lebanon today - fortunately, his family is safe - for now.

He explained in no uncertain terms that the Lebanese people support Hezbollah because Hezbollah supports the people, in all the ways you mentioned above. What’s going on there now is just so incredibly wrong - it’s hard not to despair. People who really know what’s going on have so little control over these events.
