Times, they are a’changin’

Well, I’ve not wanted to write this post. I hate doing it.

But law school beckons. I move to C’Ville next Monday. I’m going to try to post what I can until then - and I’ll be going out to CT tomorrow to audio-blog the happenings - but CallingAllWingnuts is in its death-spiral.

If you don’t like the sound of that, I’m open to ideas.

But the fact is that with a wife, toddler and 1L law school schedule, there is just no way I’ll be able to give the time necessary to run this blog properly.

I will keep the domain going. And from time to time, whenever possible, I’ll surely post some calls. I’m also going to make an attempt to make a weekly (but it’ll probably be bi-monthly if law school is what everyone says it is) person-to-person call with whatever wingnut I can reach. I’ll record these conversations on speakerphone and post them.

I really do not want to let this project die, but I won’t have the time anymore. I mean, it isn’t just hitting redial and holding for an hour. It requires reading blogs for hours a day to know your arguments (and the complete truth so you can identify the constant lies), it requires editing the clips and it requires listening to these shows. Hannity, Limbaugh and O’Reilly, taken together, amount to eight hours a day. That leaves out Brian and the Judge, Rusty Humphries, Jim Bohannon and Alan Colmes…

Ugh… I’m rambling again. I guess that’s because I really don’t want to let this baby die. Talk radio is a cesspool of disgusting rhetoric. It furthers every single Republican agenda item. It wins elections for Republicans from the Presidency to dog-catcher.

And just the sliver of sunshine that CallingAllWingnuts has shone upon this sewer has, in only six months, brought you:

So if you are a student, if you ar retired, if you are part of a DFA Group and can bring on partners… let me know. Email me through the contact form. I’m more than happy to share admin rights to this blog if it keep it alive. For the most part, so far, I’ve been one person. Imagine what we could do with 2 or 3 or 10.

I’ll have a Hannity call up later on today.

You got to do what ya got to do. Besides getting in there and confronting the disinformation put forth by the wingnuts you also had to actually *listen* to them, on a daily basis, which for any thinking American must be a form of mental anguish and self flagellation that I can only try and comprehend. You did a great job and had a great run. Life is calling.

Damn. This has been my favorite blog for the last few months. You have done a tremendous service smacking the wingnuts around with reason, and you’ve given me the courage to call the local radio nuts in Florida. I guess it’s time for me to step up to the majors and buzz Rush, Hannity, and Turkey Neck (O’Reilly), et cetera.

Best of luck to you, Mike. I have a feeling I’ll see you resurface down the road in another effective role.

Mike, say it ain’t so. I think you could make a ton of money writing a book about your experiences with this blog. I am sure Stewart/Colbert would have you on to promote it. Anyway, just a thought but best of luck in whatever you do.

    Thanks

It’s time for the rest of us, that have been listening to the wingnuts, and documenting where they are wrong, to step up and start to call them, and point out the falacies in their “logic”. Today I heard Bill Bennett say that lowering taxes rates increases revenue, and raising tax rates will decrease revenue. I know that can be easily disproved, but I was at work and couldn’t call to do it.

There will be another time though when he will bring it up again, when I’m not at work, and I can call in and dispute his assertion. I’m sure we all have spotted things certain wingnuts repeatedly state that can be proven to be false. Let’s step up and call them on it. Make sure you find a way to record it. I hope there will be a way to post it for others to hear and comment on.

Mike you’ve got a great thing going here. Hopefully there is a way it can continue, and others can pick up the torch while you are at U VA.

Thanks for all your hard work Mike. I have really enjoyed your blog and what you are trying to do. Good luck with law school and the rest. I am sure we will see more of you in the future.

    Thanks,

Good luck in your endeavors. Yes, having 2 to 3 trusted admins to post their own or calls of others will actually improve the site.

As noted, it’s a matter of being able to spend upto an hour on hold and possibly not even getting a point across due to some ham handed volume control by the radio host. It’s a bit discouraging at times trying to call in. With 2 or 3 admins and 20 to 30 callers, then getting through will never be an issue.

Mike, post a way the average Windows computer user can record his call off the stream. Just tack it onto the tips you give about being a caller.

Again, good luck in your travels. An idealistic lawyer, there’s a scary thought.

Thanx for all you have done for your country in its time of need .hopefully something will give & the site will move forward .anyway , you will have a good tale to tell the grandkids , now go get your damn edgeamakashion ! Thank you .

Paraphrasing Socrates…”The unexamined talk show host is not worth listening to”
I went back tonight and lstened to “the best call ever” to Rush by Alice. There was that instant tipping point, where she went from pro to con on Rush. Never heard it ever done so well. So ALice, whereever you are, a toast from me. And I know someone with a work from home unpaid job for you.

Mike, I commend you for what you’ve done here, an ongoing critique of the obvious. Kinda like Media Matters with a cuff to the side of the host’s head added. . But it is time to move on. The deck was inexorciably being stacked against you more and more each week as your popularity grew.

YOu’ve created something completely unique here. Usually I say “Amateurs invent, professionals copy, and rework” You invented, ( and were sometimes god awfully tongue tied at the beginning) but then you reworked.

    You found your voice.

Get the law degree, if only for the credentialed door opener it provides along with the chance the journey will take you to another level. . But always remember to remember that voice you found. Don’t let it ever get lost in the pursuit of things that 30 years hence will prove, well, nothing more than an act of padding a retirement account.

Livings can be easily earned, legacies much less so.

Great job Mike. Wish you the best, and I know we all understand how much time and energy you have devoted to this site. You have made your mark. Would love to see any tapes of voices confronting these morons posted, but realize that’s a tough job, specially since you’d HAVE TO LISTEN to the assholes to do that. That had to be painful.

I also wanted to commend your spirit and tactfulness in dealing with these propaganda spinners. Not everyone can do it. I love hearing a voice of reason that can actually confront these bastards and stay cool in the process. Too many of us just lose our cool and look like idiots, playing right into their game. You have always done proud from my memory.

Best of luck to you and your future. God bless the world, and please help pull the USA out of the toilet!!

Man, it was so nice to be able to hear all these calls without having to listen to those jackasses all day! Mike’s definitely done a lot to clear the way for the rest of us, and I can’t imagine there’s going to be any shortage of phone calls in the near future; maybe nothing as good as Wilkow’s hissy-fit, but we’ll have a good time trying!

Thank you for this great blog. I am truly sorry to hear you site won’t be as current. I have really enjoyed hearing you expose rightwing noise machine hypocrisy and their other chickenshit agenda. Good luck at law school. And watch out for FOX security, I’ve heard we can now be thrown in their gulag without trail or even being charged. No wait a minute that’s CIA or DOD. Thanks again.

    Question here, off topic.

Regarding the FCC “equal time rule”. Congressman JD Hayworth (R-AZ) is sitting in as host for the Laura Ingraham show today. Will his opponent be eligible for 3 hours of radio time to counter him being on the air? I know there have been complaints from the RW blogs (radioequalizer) when Jim McDermott (D-WA) hosted a show for a week prior to officially declaring for re-election. I’m sure Hayworth is an official candidiate for re-election. His campaign site: http://www.jdhayworth.com/
even says on it’s frontpage, that he is hosting the Laura Ingraham Show Tuesday and Thursday.

    Mike,

Thanks for all the hard work. It can’t be easy to listen to right wing hemmorhoids all day.
    Best of luck,

    Brian

  16. 16 John

    Mike,

I really hope you can find a way to keep this blog going. There have got to be others out there that are as smart as you are and are willing to help keep this blog going.

  17. 17 john x

you’ve made a small impact in the blogosphere. that’s not easy to do.

  18. 18 adigal

Thanks for your hard work! If you are up to it, I got through to Hannity today, I was SArah from Albany, NY, and I was on about 4:20 to 4:30 time slot.

He is such a tool!! He was still trying to prove I was a nut 20 minutes later because I told his listeners to go to dailykos.com for themselves, with other ex-Republicans such as myself, and see if they are extreme.

I love to call!! I wonder if I will be getting another call from Fox Security???? :)

  19. 19 drseuss

    I’ve got an idea Mike.

Right now it’s a one man operation and that is a lot of work. I appreciate greatly your efforts.

If enough people want to make this happen then it could work. Getting audio for non national shows will be tricky but isn’t impossible.

What I envision is a hydra appearing.
If enough people call in and one or many are taping and editing this could work.

This would lighten the load for all. Maybe it’s called calling all wingnuts, maybe we coordinate in dark smoky rooms, but I know a lot of us want this to continue.

Is there a legal angle to this strategy that I’m missing? Seems to me that guys C&L post up clips of TV and radio, so I’m guessing that this is fair use (especially if we’re not going to profit of this). right?

  20. 20 shan

you’ve become one of my “must visit” sites and you’ve been so generous with your time, and even letting us get to know you.

I agree with the poster who recommended you write a book - I’m sure you’ll figure out a way to squeeze a 25th hour into the day.

And congratulations on being part of the Good Riddance Joe movement.

    That’s quite a legacy!

  21. 21 Yakki

drseuss makes a good point, and the one earlier about guest bloggers or soemthing was good too.

As far as local radio and such,it could be easy I think. All you need is to tune a radio in with a cassette recorder and tape the call. Running line level audio into a soundcard is no trouble either. And there are numerous free softwares out there that people making the calls can record with without spending a cent.

Mike, maybe you can do “oped” pieces when you get the chance, and those calls that come in from bloggers and people here can go through a panel of three of the regulars(old regulars, not newbies like myself).

It could definetly work. And with the added local radio spots, this site would really take it to these nuts.

  22. 22 Yakki

really do not want to let this project die, but I won’t have the time anymore. I mean, it isn’t just hitting redial and holding for an hour. Hannity, Limbaugh and O’Reilly, taken together, amount to eight hours a day. That leaves out Brian and the Judge, Rusty Humphries, Jim Bohannon and Alan Colmes…

So how about seperating each show to a regular who wishes to take it on. If that goes stale or they start blocking one person, switch up.

That way all the shows can be hit, nobody is having their life taken away, and CallingAllWingnuts is still the scourge of right wing radio.

Pleae excuse me though. I’m just tossing ideas out and probably sound like an idiot.

Another liberal voice silenced. Sniff, sniff, I can only hope the rest go down as easily.

Best not stray too far from campus there in western VA. They don’t take too kindly to your type.

Enjoy law school - I did, but you will get in a lot more softball, which is all they ever seem to do at UVA.

Well, well. The fascist brigade is out in force I see.

You know, that highlighted quote from you seems really familiar. Maybe it has to do with seperate water fountains or something.,or something about not “letting the sun go down on your colored ass in this town”.

Of course, you could be trying sarcasm.

  25. 25 Yakki

Of course, with a name like nom deplume,it has to be good!

    :)

(That’s a joke BTW. And attempt at easy banter. For clarity’s sake.)

  26. 26 FloydTBarber

I visit this site daily. You have shown how it is done. With some practice we can ALL become “Mike from Albany.” Thanks. This does not have to be the end of anything. Good luck!

  27. 27 Debbie

1L is *not* as bad as others make it out to be. It is a transition to a style of learning that you’ve probably not previously experienced, the horror stories are greatly overblown.
I hope that things go well for you and that we are able to continue to benefit from your site.

hey best of luck mike, lovd ur site, made me laugh a few times and ill be sad to c u go!
