Is this ok?

I’m not Jewish, so maybe this is one of those things that is only ok for Marty Peretz (editor at TNR) to say - because he’s Jewish.  But wow…  I think telling Jews that they don’t care what happens to Jews is pretty over the effin top.  Howard Dean is discredited for a cheer?  What’s this do to TNR?

I don’t think it’s ok. Yesterday I was flipping past Faux News to see what they were spinning and there was a guy - probably the same guy, the name sounds familiar - talking to Cavuto, telling him that “Jews inherently feel so guilty that they want to align themselves with anti-semitists, so that they can feel ’safe’”

It was the most asinine thing I’ve heard in long time!

Okay - ThinkProgress has the video I saw yesterday with Cavuto. It was Dennis Prager saying Jews hate themselves: http://thinkprogress.org/2006/08/09/jews-israel/

I am Jewish and find it offensive, if not telling, when right wing Jews immediately accuse Jewish critics of Israeli policy of being self-haters. It’s classic Republicanism to not address actual issues and, instead, create labels that attempt to discount logical arguments against particular policies. it’s an easier m.o. than making an substantive arguments…

I am jewish, and I do believe there is a tremendous amount of self hatred amongst my people.

It is not all israel centric though.

I heard this on Bennett’s show yesterday and hit the roof. What a lying, pathetic apologist. On top of having the most annoying speech impediment in the history of the spoken language.
Peretz truly has a voice for print, to paraphrase the hackneyed DJ joke.
What is wrong with these freaks? Honestly, I can’t understand how these people are currently employed after advancing theories that couldn’t hold water even if fully submerged in it. Peretz obviously has a slow annurism, and we should all take pitty on the stroker. On second thought, fuck him and his imperialist-authoritarian propaganda.

You have to forgive some of my fellow Jews for not being capable, in spite of the apparent success they have mustered, of shedding the ‘victim mentality’ that pervades Euro-Jewish culture. Most Israelis, by the way, do NOT share that character flaw. It is something that real men and women outgrow when their tribal paranoias. One would be amazed at how much of Jewish culture and religion is shaped by our persecutors.

Ok. So the Arab nations want to wipe out Israel. This is news? Haven’t the Israelis proven themselves stable and able to defend themselves against all odds? The time for being whiny little “Diaspora” cry babies is long over. The only time one hears the mantra of ‘Never Again” seems to only be when those right-wing Jews want some killing done on their behalf.

Those of us critical of Israeli policy are not ’self-hating’ Jews and more than those who criticize the Bush Administraion are ‘un American’. We are simply honest enough to acknowledge our own cultural or political flaws and seek to correct them. I fully support the state of Israel and her right to defend herself from attack, BUT there comes a time when brute force cannot solve the issue.

    Well said, Shlomo.

My take, as an American Jew, is that first of all, Christians need to step off telling me what my relation is to my religion. You have no rights to judge my devotion because, frankly, you gave up your Judaism when you chose to follow a man who called himself the messiah.

Another point is that these people - even the Fox Jews - seem to have a desperate desire to be anti-semetic without being able to be labeled as such. This especially goes to O’Reilly who continually says liberal Jews support terrorism. You can’t blame everything on part of the Jews and act as if you are divorced from the grand old tradition of blaming everything on all of the Jews.

As for the “self-hating” schtick, I’ve been told for years that I am not Jewish because I am not Orthodox, but that has not driven me from my faith. My faith is a personal thing, and, like Abraham, I will not allow anyone to dictate to me what to believe - even people of my own religion.

I’ve been to Israel and I’ve seen the smoke from bombings and I do care about the future of the nation, but that doesn’t mean I have to back everything they do. I am, after all, an American Jew, with a love of my nation and no intention of getting Israeli citizenship and, even if I did, I would be as critical of that nation as I am of my own.

The truth is that when people first emigrated to the US many groups not just Jews the Dems were there to help them acclimate so they voted Dem. It has held on through generations. It explains my very biased Irish great grandfather saying he would always vote Dem even if they ran a China man. I’m not very proud of that ancestor but it was the early 1900’s and people were ignorant
