I always wonder about this

I called Hannity and was his forst caller of the New Year on January 2nd. Man, I hope that’s an indicator of the kind of year Hannity and the rest of the right are in for! I think it’s, overall, a pretty entertaining call.
Anyway, we danced around making small talk for a while before he let me get to the point I wanted to make. (During the small talk though, I got to ask him how long he plans on whining about losing the election. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to ask if his joy at the Lieberman victory compensated for his agony of the Allen loss (he was one of Allen’s biggest fans)).

I made the point that saddam was tried for a ruthless opression of a revolt - he ruthlessly put down a civil war attempt. I pointed out that we’ve got the same sort of thing in our history - that Abe Lincolm sent eneral Sherman marching across the South burning everything in his path - fields, houses, farm animals - everything. In terms of ruthlessness, Lincoln, through Sherman, did everything he could to destroy the South and win his Civil War. He was ruthless. Saddam, equally so. So why is Saddam a monster for doing what Lincoln did?

This is what I wonder about: the point I made is unassailable in its logic (I think). Even so, is it a profitable argument? Does it open any eyes or further the progressive agenda in any way? Or does it hurt us? It seems that some arguments might be useful when you are talking amongst friends, but they are self-defeating when used as part of a conversation with the larger public. I fear this is one of those arguments.

No matter. I enjoy the idea of forcing mouth-breathers to think every once in a while. If I wasn’t already in a den of snakes, I’d probably temper that approach. But on Hannity? What have I got to lose?

Only a liberal would compare Saddam to Abe!

hey Mike - you know full well that I didn’t compare Saddam to Abe… the comparison - the question I’m raising is this: why is putting down a revolt by “islamofascists” Iranians that would have created a Taliban style theocracy - that would have shut down the university system that Saddam kept open to women, that would have executed adultresses, that would have beheaded men for trimming their beards - why did Saddam get the death penalty for being ruthless in his defeat of radicals? Didn’t we get pretty ruthless when Lincoln sent Sherman across the South burning everything in his path? What did the children and women of the South do to deserve their treatment at the hands of Sherman?

Of course, you’ll take the cowards route and avoid any substantive discussion of the real question - but that’s why liberals think most conservatives are stupid schmucks. It’s just too damned bad y’all constantly prove us correct.

i heard the call live….it was brilliant

its too bad that you couldnt have gone off topic and ask the heil one where the money for the “freedom” concerts really goes…..the charities connected are all phonies

and you are right mike…the execution of sadaam was a mess, and showed that all we have done is to create another shiite state that we will be called upon to destroy in the future

what happened to the real trials regarding the torture and murder of thousands, or the gassing of the kurds? of course, those trials would be embarresing to this country as we allowed and may have encouraged much of those actions

    hannity is an idiot

First, Mike doesn’t support the horrific actions of Saddam. He was merely drawing a parallel between leaders of two different countries, and the actions they took to put down opponents. It would be one thing if Mike supported all the actions of Saddam, like gassing children, or equated those actions with the actions of Abe Lincoln, but he didn’t.

Sean chose to talk about lots of the horrible things Saddam did, rather than discussing the actions for which he was sentenced to death. “Saddam has already been convicted and sentenced to death for the killing of nearly 150 people in the town of Dujail after a 1982 attempt to assassinate him.”
    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,237429,00.html

So the actions he was sentenced to death for, (killing people that attempted to assassinate him), occurred in 1982. Do you remember the Saddam and Donald Rumsfeld handshake photo? That was from December 20, 1983. I guess we really didn’t care about what he was doing to his people at the time. Would Reagan have supported Saddam being sentenced to death for these (re)actions? It’s obvious he would not. I guess that means that Reagan was a Saddam supporter, right????

Also Mike, when I played the audio directly from the link, it was fast, and the voices sounded like mickey mouse. When I downloaded it to Windows media player, it played fine. Glad to hear you back on the radio again, hope your first semester went well, best to you and the family.

I don’t know if you changed anything on the player, but the speed seems to be fine now.

Hey, Mike, I think you do a good job with this website and taking the time to talk these characters to show what yahoos they really are. But I think what you said in your written commentary regarding this call is correct. I don’t think comparing Lincoln to Saddamm helps the progressive cause at all. I understand what you are getting at and Ezra really helped explain it better, but I think that’s a can of worms best left unopened. Only my opinion mind you. But keep up the greatwork!

  9. 9 Fascist USA

Knowing that I live in a FASCIST COUNTRY as opposed to a DEMOCRACY…

I know the whole Saddam trial and execution was a farce.

I know the whole Iraq War is about OIL.

I know the “surge” in Iraq is really an ESCALATION that is DOOMED. Just like it was DOOMED when America ESCALATED in Vietnam. Different War, same LIES.

I wish Lord Bush would stop this Illegal, Immoral Iraq War, deciding to instead SURGE Barbara once in a while.

I know our Mainstream “News” is Government/Corporate PROPOGANDA.

I know our History is Rewritten. Abe Lincoln was a Dictator. “Stopping slavery” was Abe’s “spreading Democracy”. (I am AGAINST slavery)

I also know why Fascists call me a “liberal”. Fascists also HATE “commies”, “socialists”, and “queers”. Have you picked up a copy of AMERICAN FASCIST : The Church and Fascism (in stores now! I wonder why??)

I also know the whole Disney shutting down a blog is CENSORSHIP and that in FASCIST AMERICA, Corporate Power will be upheld. Unless someone like MIKE does something about it.

The American Civil War was certainly a bloody one. But I don’t compare the Union Army meeting on the battlefied with the Confederate forces as comparable to Saddam gassing 150,000 Kurds. So no, your “logic” is not unnassailable.

Comments have to be “moderated” first before they see the light of day. LOL. Why am I not surprised. Afraid of some of your own medicine? You are the definition of a coward.
