Well…
Published by Mike Stark January 21st, 2007 in UncategorizedI’ll agree with the wingnutosphere that if this morning was any indication of my future, I’m not going to be hired as a janitor anytime soon. I was a little nervous about the braggadocio preceding the event, but hell, I think you’ve got to be a little bit cocky before stepping into the lion’s den…
Don’t get me wrong - I don’t think this exchange was contested - Dan Riehl didn’t even show up, really. My problem with me is that I lost my train of thought for a minute there in the beginning and I didn’t get to fully unload everything I had planned.
For example, the first thing out of my mouth should have been that so far, the ONLY person that’s been silenced in this whole ordeal is Spocko. I also wanted to do what I could to point up the fact that the right has grown dependent on wingnut welfare - to the extent that now they think it’s their birthright to have Corporate America pay for their irresponsible, reprehensible and unhinged rhetoric… finally, just from a color/framing standpoint, I dropped the ball when I didn’t use the term “snuff talk”.
Listen, this is the deal… The first time I called Bill O’Reilly, I was incredibly psyched - and anxious. I knew that within a matter of minutes, I’de be talking to millions of people. My heart was in my throat, and when Baxter put me on the air, anyone listening, I’m sure, could tell how anxious I was.
Funny thing though… by the third time, or so, I realized I was talking to Barney - the drunk clown that sits in the corner seat at the bar on the Simpsons… He was intellectually inferior to me and I had nothing to be afraid of. I commanded that stage, even if he commanded everything else like the mic, volume and, ultimately, my dial tone… It was just something I got used to. I imagine TV is the same way.
Crooks and Liars has the video. (I love you guys - thanks John!)
Oh - and I’ve got something else coming soon… It’ll take me a little while to post, but here’s a hint: Jonah Goldberg was in the Green Room with me…
(update) thanks to CC in the comments for the Moe/Barney correction…

Mike - Don;t be too hard on yourself - you did fine. Rememeber, as others have said, stick with one key point and keep bringing it back to it if you can. If you go into these 6 minute segments with too much on your plate, you come across as unfocused.
“Snuff talk” is harsh, “hate talk” is better as a term - but I think you are being too hard on yourself there. You did fine.
Rock on man!
I saw you this morning, too - you did great and Riehl may as well have been wearing a prom dress.
hey mike, you did pretty good. just wanted to correct your post though…. Moe is the bartender. Barney is the “drunk clown”. you’re still one of my heros though.
Mike is making a habit of having his ass handed to him. First it was an old man who bodyslammed him, this time, a blogger who didn’t bring his A game beats up on poor Mike. I give Mike credit for his novelty and even ending up on National TV more than once. I would be lying if I didn’t note that Mike is HORRIBLE when the rubber meets the road.
Hey Glen, if you say it enough times it still wont make it true.
Even when the corporate enablers of the Reichwing slant the arguments in favor of the wingnuts the truth always manage to makes itself known, as Mike made clear.
Mike, it wont be long before you drive a stake through their very heart, the more time you get on the air the more comfortable you will be clubbing these idiots senseless with the one thing they truly fear: The truth.
mike,
i am glad to see that you do acknowledge that the appearance was not your best moment.
first, you allowed kurtz to change the facts and reframe the argument
fact… spocko never called for a boycott. he never asked nor demanded that advertisers pull their spots from the station. they did that on their own after hearing teh clips and doing their own research.
fact…abc/disney did not simply demand that the clips be taken off of spocko’s blog, they got spocko’s entire blog taken down, even after he pulled the clips.
kurtz attempted to alledge something sinister in the fact that spocko chooses to remain anonymous, when there is nothing sinister about it. As a result of the possible legal threats by a large corporation, he is fearful, being a small blogger without resources for adequate legal representation.
And i really wish that instead of bringing up coulter, you would have brought up the fact that just turning off hate speech doesnt make it go away. and you couldve used the rwanda example
riehle pointing out your guerilla protest on fox was totally ot and showed that he had no substansive arguments.
all i’m gonna say is, good job…you got on nat’l t.v. you didn’t have to be perfect…just getting there and providing a counterpoint to the drivel is huge…none of us did it; you did it…thank you.
Nice Job Mike!
It’s funny Howie Kurtz doesn’t think the Right wing radio rhetoric will spur violence. I guess cartoons degrading the Muslim religion won’t cause any violence either, right?
The more Wingnuts call for violence (genocide) against the Muslims, the stronger their response will be.
Bacci hit the nail on the head. As soon as the host referred to Spocko’s “boycott” I expected you to be all over him.
Kurtz seemed to interrupt a lot and switch gears. Kurtz’s stream of consciousness style moderating is unprofessional at best. I can easily see how you got side tracked from your strong opening remarks. As soon as he went ‘conservative guy’ Kurtz was then interested in what that guy said and Kurtz continued going back and forth, interrupting.
Kurtz is easily distracted, I think he was very excited that he was talking with someone on TV. You didn’t lose, but you didn’t hit a homerun. How about a solid single for your answer to the first question.
Wait, he wasn’t body slammed by some old guy and he didn’t get worked over on CNN? Could’ve sworn I saw both of those things.
Glen you have a firm grasp on hyperbole. He was not body slammed he was knocked to the ground as a result of his passive resitance. As for his CNN appearance, Mike has admitted it was not his finest hour, but the guy they put out there against him couldn’t get out of his own way so he didn’t really need to bring his A game.
Mike you did a good job everyone gets nervous the first few times. Oreally is right Howie has that weird style that goes all over the place. Chris Matthews has that style too..questions that come out of left field. Looking forward to your next appearance.
I see that Reihl has sent his goons over here..doesn’t look like much of a crowd. Only enough to have a small tea party.
I took the liberty of posting another copy of the clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmO6gRHjqeM for those who don’t want to give the Hot Air people more clicks.
“Well Sean Hannity DOES suck ass”
LMFAO!!!!
Awesome and true.
Disney is not the family friendly company they claim to be. My sister is in the TV/Movie business. When people get contracts to work there they refer to the place as “Mouschewitz”
I’ve been to Riehl’s site, too. It’s fun and they’re not really too articulate over there. I’m waiting to be banned by them. Sites like his and Red State and Ankle Biting and Polipundit, you know, unless you sing with the choir they won’t let you sing at all.
With amazed sadness I read these posts…If you guys are really so empty that you cannot own the fact that Stark was made a fool on this show then our odds of ever gaining TRUE control are nearly nil. That’s it: I hereby terminate my Democrat voter registration and give up wholly on the Progressive movement. This has been a while coming but, re: my post of yesterday, I cannot abide the low level MY PARTY has sunk to. I give up. I will fight for my beliefs my way, but you guys? Losers one and all and damned to stay as such for as long as you accept banality and cannot perceive excellence. So f**king sad…
Hey, Mike, I think you will get better at staying on topic with the more TV time you get. I think you did a fine job all in all. I wouldn’t be able to do stuff like that. I’m such a coward I can’t even call my boss on his racist, bigoted rhetoric.
Losingmyreligion,
You bely your true identity when you refer to the “democrat” party, go back to wingnut world.
dang…trolls are way too ez to spot nowadays
funny, i didnt think my post was all that lauditory
and it is a fact that kurtz, mike and riehl all went off topic
and it was mike’s duty to bring everything back to topic
what mike did to support spocko in the web campaign was exempillary…and in doing so, he showed the hypocracy of attack radio
had mike stayed on script, he wouldve wiped the floor with both kurtz and riehl….and riehl’s personal attack would have been much more absurd
losinmyreligion needs to go to church
YOu really should check out Riehlworld - He’s being kicked RIGHT and LEFT. Seems his hypocrisy is showing.
“If you guys are really so empty that you cannot own the fact that Stark was made a fool on this show then our odds of ever gaining TRUE control are nearly nil.”
Congress is a good start for now, concern troll.
“Well Sean Hannity DOES suck ass”
Amazing Mike. Is that all that you can come up with? How about showing some testicular fortitude and go on his show and debate like a man. Not like a school kid with a sign in the background that has nothing to offer.
Mike Stark:
I viewed the clip over at Crooks and Liars, and quite simply put, you did an excellent job of sticking with the FACTS while the host kept trying to introduce questions that were a lead in with right wing talking points. You weren’t debating one right winger blogger, you were debating two right winger shouting heads.
Please Mike Stark (and all other liberal and progressive proponents), stick with facts. You will win the debate. I do.
Keep up the good work Mike.
