Boot Boortz movement growing in Virginia

As many of you know, right now I live in Charlottesville, Virginia. It’s a unique state – you can’t help but to feel connected to the land and to other Virginians, even if you are somewhat of an interloper from New York. There’s a certain sense of being a part of the “Commonwealth” – you connect with the land, the air and the ghost of Thomas Jefferson…
So when the Hokies suffered their loss two weeks ago, a cold and thick blanket of mourning fell across the whole state. Birds didn’t chirp as loudly, flowers didn’t bloom as brightly and it was cloudier than usual…
As Virginians worked to rationalize their way to emotional equilibrium, hundreds of thousands of us were confronted with a particularly odious grief-merchant that sought to profit by dancing on the graves of our fallen. Neil Boortz, the conservative shock-jock out of Atlanta, is broadcast on AM stations across the Commonwealth. On April 17th, the day after the shootings, at a time nobody really knew yet what had happened - and some parents were still wondering if their child was among the slain - Boortz used his platform to wonder, “How the hell do 25 students allow themselves to be lined up against the wall in a classroom and picked off one by one? How does that happen, when they could have rushed the gunman, the shooter, and most of them would have survived?”
Soon thereafter, Boortz boorish and insulting musings earned him the wrath of thousands of listeners, Virginian and otherwise. As the the state exploded with indignation, Boortz got busy composing his response: a blog entry, posted the next day, entitled “The Wussification of America.”
Now, by clear implication, according to Boortz, the slain Hokies were wussies. Classy guy, that Boortz.
By the third day, a message had been sent to Boortz’s syndicators. Evidently, his bosses had a little talk with him, because on his show that day, Boortz apologized for his insensitive rantings. This apology seemed to assuage some of his affiliates and the issue seemed to blow over for a few days.
Until last Tuesday – a full week after the massacre – when Boortz wrote this on his blog: “At the center of this controversy are some of the thoughts I expressed last week in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings. Since I first uttered my politically incorrect thoughts I have apologized; not for what I said, but for how I said it.”
So he’s not sorry for what he said… He meant to call Virginians, and Americans, wussies and cowards in a less “politically incorrect” manner.
This was finally enough for the political establishment in Virginia. Governor Tom Kaine weighed in. He was followed soon thereafter by three Virginia legislators. Virginia Tech’s student paper got involved. Then the media picked it up. Letters to the editor poured in. And now, Blacksburg’s Boortz carrier is reconsidering.
There are six other Virinia stations that carry Boortz.
Boortz’s continued contempt for Virginians prompted me to call the Virginia radio stations that carry his show. I spoke with General Managers and Program Directors in seven different cities. Some of these folks were pretty reasonable. Others not so much… In the end, I’ve compiled a fairly interesting window on the heartbeat of conservative talk radio in Virginia. I thought it incredible that he could say this - in a state that suffered through the most horrible gun shooting in Unites States history - and the state’s radio stations wouldn’t respond. Here’s a window on one of my conversations.
This is a bit of my call to Boortz’s Martinsville, VA carrier. I spoke with Jason Wyatt, the sone of the station’s owner.

Another really good one, Mike. I’m pretty well informed and hadn’t even heard of this until today. I just returned from southeast asia Friday so maybe that’s why.
I often wonder why you don’t get more comments. Your work is unique and excellent.
I wonder if Boortz considers our Soldiers and Marines part of this “Wussification of America”? After all, they are from the same generation as the slain Va Tech students. What incidents can Boortz point to in his own experience to demonstrate he would have charged the business end of two pistols? That swine would have used the homecoming queen as a shield. I listen to this moron during my morning commute and the only brave tales he shares is what HIS FATHER did during WWII. It would be as pathetic as me attempting to hijack my father’s combat experience in Vietnam as my own. I could almost (but probably not) accept this rhetoric from Ollie North. At least he walked the walk. But Boortz? Not a chance.
Unbelievably this Jason Wyatt clown is more despicable than Neal. At least Boortz had the nuts to say what he thought (I feel funny using the word thought pertaining to this neanderthal) when Wyatt essentially said “I don’t have the stones to stand behind what I believe in a public forum”.
Mike, please do what you can to get this Wyatt tape in the local media’s hands. This station should be exposed as a pack of sick ratings chasers.

I’m just vaguely away of Boortz and dont really listen much at all to talk radio…but it occurs to me why so few of his listeners complained about his comments on the VT tragedy…….people who listen to him on a regular basis are more like him than not…..people who would be incensed by his type of mean-spirited stupidity are unlikely to tune in on him, or others like him. Sad to say we live in a world where there are so many hateful individuals that they are pandered to by conservative talk radio…angry, mean, hate filled, devicive people who tune in to Boortz and aspplaud his “honesty”. Sad, very sad….and frightening as well. Maybe we should all carry a gun.
Neal Boortz is a classic grown up pussy. The man now can say things like this without his bluff being called and being shoved in a locker.
All jokes aside though, that was some sick shit. He apparently still doesn’t reach enough people and if any of the VA Tech students’ families have heard these rotten comments they’re so far in their grief it’s the last fucking thing on their minds.
So I’m glad you’re speaking for them Mike. The problem is that your name, when they hear it, is associated with like Michael Moore and so they don’t listen to anything else you have to say.
However, it’s just my opinion that Boortz is a full blown chickenshit pussy that would offer any kind of monetary bribe or disgusting favor to a man, not with a gun, but just with two fists at the ready to pop him in the jaw a couple times. What baffles me is why anyone takes these loudmouth, paper tigers seriously. It truly is stunning that Joe Sixpack on the way to work, or Dave OfficeManager doesn’t see the incredible irony in a pot bellied, bald draftdodger that we can all see has no physical attributes go on about what he woulda done had a guy been pointing a couple guns in his face and how anyone that doesn’t do just that (and who the fuck is to say they didn’t try!?) is a wussy and apparently deserved it.
My hope for Boortz is a major league ass whooping, but short of that, yea, I hope you get some stations to pull his shrill girly ass.
