This is always a tough one to disentangle - basically because we get so little reliable information here in the United States…

But some things we do know are that Chavez won election with 62% of the vote - a level of vote not seen in an American election in at least 150 years…

We know that the oligarchy that lost power to Chavez has done everything they possibly can to undermine his rule - even so far as exercising a coup… and perhaps even more insidiously… launching a management strike.

We know that the oligarchy ruled Venezuela for generation after generation. They were mostly of European descent, mostly lived along the coasts, owned almost all of the land and never thought it important to educate or provide health care for the brown-skinned natives.

On the other hand, we also know that Chavez shut down a television station that was complicit in the coup against him.

We know that, so far, Chavez hasn’t had his army herd dissenters into a stadium to have them shot by machine-gun wielding Army thugs…

We also know that the transition has been rocky and that Hugo Chavez is no Barack Obama in terms of skillful reconciliation of opposed factions…

So yeah - this was the third time in less than a year that Jim has had soem anti-Chavez nut stink up his radio show. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if there is a CIA propaganda op that is simmering as the United States weighs its options re: South America and Venezuela’s oil… Call me crazy, but after Jessica Lynch, Pat Tillman, Pinochet, etc… Well, one maxim I just cannot let go of is that old saw about those that forget history being doomed to repeat it… it seems more and more apropos with every passing day.

This crazy old bat called me a liar, but refused to say what I was dishonest about. She studiously refused to acknowledge that the oligarchy (and management class - those that controlled every lever of Venezuela’s economy) launched a management strike in order to undermine Chavez’ support in the populace. It is no exaggeration to say that they were so opposed to educating and providing health care to the brown-skinned underclass that they decided to starve them by disrupting the gears of the economy.

I don’t know how true her claims of Chavez imprisoning thousands are… but if he put some of these people in jail, well… I won’t be shedding any tears for them.
